Bladder problems Hi guys: My little GiGi was being treated for UTI since Aug 15 of this year. While I think that has been cured she is now being tested for bladder trouble. I have confidence in the vet that is helping us with that but I know that one or more of you have been down this road before and what ever information you have will be appreciated. She is now on a chewable med to see if what she needs is just (I use that word "just" as a HOPE) to strenghten her bladder. He said that could take one pill....or. Lots of prayers needed. Tina |
I'm sorry you are going through this.:( I get very concerned now whenever I hear someone say that their Yorkie has a UTI that won't clear up or has had more than one in a few months time. If your dog is cured why is the vet doing further testing? What tests is your vet doing? |
This is a different vet. I say she is cured of the infection because the accidents are not as large. In other words she is doing little spots and not every day. That is why I think it is something else than an infection like stones or something. I am not really very knowledgable on the particulars of these different illnesses. But I am very worried. today when I got home from work she did a larger one than yesterday...in other words she is not going to the weewee pad as she is trained to do. This is not the same vet that treated her for the UTI....he said let's put that aside and focus on the bladder. He is judging by what I told him about the symptoms and also the fact that the antibiotic has not totaly cured the accidents. As I had said I am very worried. Tina |
im send my and coco's prayers ur way |

Oh my, I've been down this road before. Sounds like stones to me. Bailey had those. I was first told he just had a UTI too but I pushed the issue and asked them to rule out stones. Turned out he needed emergency surgery for bladder stones. Have you had an x-ray done to look for stones or had her urine analyzed for crystals? That's where I would start. |
Some stones don't show up on x-rays and actually need an ultrasound, so if no stones show on x-ray, have the u/s done. |
Yes the previous vet did the ultrasound and xrays (full body) and urine analysis. Our current vet did a urine analysis too. Our current vet (we used to go to him and decided to go back to him. He is so informative) says that sometimes the stones don't show up in xrays. I changed vets cause this guy at least speaks to me while the other one just talks to his staff....he is like a real moron (knows his stuff, I guess, but not very personable). I've been doing some research on bladder probs but of course I can understand some of it but some of it is too medical. So far it looks like our vet will have to do a few more test before we can tell what it is for sure. I kinda hope it is stones cause that is curable. She just started the new medication yesterday so I guess I'll give it a week or so unless it starts to get worse. Tina |
GiGi had an ultra sound done Aug 15...the vet said she was ok and just had a UTI. This is another reason why we went back to our other vet....she still has something. I am very confused...something is not right. We may have to have another ultrasound done.....I am guessing. Tina |
when they do the urinalysis, they should also do a urine culture to determine what type of bacteria it is and which antibiotic would be most helpful. |
I am sure this vet will .... he is very through. Looks like we have to start from scratch. Tina |
Good luck, and keep us updated! |
i sure hope that your little gets feeling better and soon! |
That's the funnt thing she is feeling great and is playful as usual. But she is obviously not in pain.....and I don't want her to get to that point before we can do something to help her. Thanks for your prayers and good wishes....I will be very relieved when this is over for her. Tina |
Hi all: Just wanted to up date you in the status of GiGi's bladder problem. her current vet had given her some chew tabs to strengthen her bladder....well she has been on them for them since Wednesday and as of Friday she has had no accidents while on the med. Today I am cutting her meds by 1/2 dosage to see how she does. Maybe this is what she needed. I will be calling her vet next week to discuss her condition and see if I should bring her or anything else os her's in. Hoping she now ok. Tina |

I think another poster mentioned this, but has either of your vets taken a sterile sample? They have to use a catheter to get the sample directly from the bladder, then send it out to the lab to grow a culture which can take a few days, even up to week. Only then can they tell for sure what bacteria they are dealing with. Lady had a uti last winter that wouldn't go away. It turned out after they grew a culture that she had two different strains of bacteria and needed a combination of antibiotics to clear it up. I wouldn't cut back on her pills just yet if I were you since she's only been on them a few days. I'd take them exactly as your vet prescribed them. |
Hi : He said I can add to or cut back if I wanted to depending on how she is responding to the med. To day she even tried to get my attention to let me know she had to go. She hasn't done that in a while.:) I put her on the weewee pad and she went. I think she is comming around. Yes, it is truly frustrating esp having to have then go thru these diff tests. The vet may still want to take some samples. Have to see when I call him. Tina |
Hi All: Another update on GiGi's UTI/bladder prob. Since Wednesday the 10th she has been on a chewable 1/8 tablet 2x's a day by the 12th she had stopped having even small (dime size) accidents. I cut her med to 1 dosage a day since Sunday. When I got home from work yesterday she had made it to the weewee pad before I got home. I was going to give her 1/2 dosage for the rest of the week but since she has already responded well I never gave her a dosage yesterday and today she is good so far. I was waiting to call the vet but I am going to call him today to let him know how she is doing. I am sooooo relieved hope she doesn't have a relapse. Tina |
hi, need your help could you please tell me the name of the chew tabs you used for your Gigi....we rescued a yorkie and he appears to have the same symptoms. Thank you so much for your time. |
