I did get to bring him home and I couldn't be happier right now that he was so strong and pulled all through this. Although the vet really doesn't know what happened, she thinks it may have something to do with the fact that I switched his food on him too soon and gave him a tummy ache where he became dehydrated and his blood sugar dropped. He was put on fluids and was looking better but then developed an infection from his IV which wasn't caught for a couple of days and when it finally was treated, he started to perk back up a little bit. He is home with me as of Friday and eating quite a bit on his own, although it's still not enough and I have to syringe feed him every now and then. He's getting better little by little and becoming the little puppy I first brought home. He's such a little fighter though and I appreciate all the thoughts and prayers from everyone. I really think they made a noticeable difference. I took him back for a check up this morning and the vet said he is looking much better. His hydration and temperature are great. He lost a little weight from when he left the vets office, but he has been a little more active than he was there so that could account for a little weight loss. I guess I'll just need to keep feeding him every couple of hours and hopefully he'll regain everything he lost plus some. Thanks again for your concerns!!

Can you tell me how long it took to recuperate? Mine is at the vet since Friday with similar symptoms. She is 4 months. She is doing better and she is still on IV... Can you just tell me how long it was from when he started getting sick to when he is ok at home?

I think we've exhausted a bunch of the tests and I just want him home. The longer this goes, the more of a chance he has of not coming home because obviously he has to eat. I just don't know what to do and any suggestions on what is going wrong. I don't think he got into anything although I can't completely rule that out. I just want some answers. . . My heart can't handle losing another puppy :cry:


I am so sorry to hear this, I know this feeling as my other puppy has been up and down with similar not eating spells and refusing everything, yet vet could never find anything wrong with him. He started to pick back up a little bit now and is gaining weight. Are you at home all day with him or he is alone for long periods?

No she is at the Vet clinic on IV... she is in good hands :) She is getting better but she puke again last night... I can't wait till the vets phone me in about an hour... It's very stressful!

Why did you take him home so early? They should remain with the litter and breeder at least until 11 weeks or 12 weeks, I will never take a puppy home before that. And even at that age they are tender little things.

I know this feeling of hopeless and helplessness with an infant puppy. That is why I am bringing this yorkie home on sat at 16 weeks and not a day before that:D

He quit eating on Wednesday, September 26 and I was able to bring him home Friday, October 12th. The vet thinks he either had a bad tummy ache or he may have had a mild case of pancreatitis. After being on an IV for the first night, he was looking much better and the vet thought he might have been able to go home that night except that evening, he quit eating again. It took a couple of days, but they found an infection from his IV which she believes may have caused him to quit eating. After the infection cleared up, he was looking much better, so the vet decided to let him sit a while longer on the IV until he had his fluids up again at which time she let me take him home. He's doing great now, eating by himself and playing every now and then. He's still pretty weak, but he tries to be active. It'll just take time until he gets to be himself again. I am not at home with him all day because I have classes, but he is being watched at all times so I know he is still in good care while being at home. He looks much better since he's been home than when he was still at the vet's, so things are really looking up.

I thought he was a little young to be taking home as well, but I had him vet checked and he was perfectly fine. I don't fault the breeder at all for anything that happened because I honestly think much of this could be avoided. Also, the breeder has sent many puppies home at that age and has never had a problem, so I think he really would have been fine if I were able to keep his food the same. I agree there are some puppies that shouldn't go home at that age, but I have total faith in knowing that my breeder knew what she was doing and knew which puppies were ready. She has had a strong background in animals, so I trust her judgement. Anyway, he's doing much better now and I suppose that's all that really matters :)

Good to hear that everything is getting better! Nothing more worrysome that a finicky puppy. I took home my Benjamin when he was 6 weeks only because his momma had eaten something and had to have surgury to remove a bowel obstruction. Some things that I learned:

I always keep some nutri cal (or karo syrup in a pinch) on hand. Yorkies sent home too early really need to make sure that they are feed regularly. Sometimes sitting down with them and putting a little on your finger helps wet the appetite. My rule is if they wont eat for one day (12 hrs or so) they get a little karo. Better safe than sorry.

Also, playing with them and making mealtime fun can help (yes I have growled and acted like I was eating his food, lol)

Welcome to YT. LOL. I know what you mean about getting on all fours and playing like you are a dog. I am trying to get my 4 week old puppies to eat pured puppy food and you have to play with them to get them to eat it. They love it and even growl back. They track little food prints everywhere because they like to walk in the plate. LOL.

I am so happy that your puppy is doing better. I hope that everything goes well from here on out.
