Benadryl Question...Need quick answer Ellie has been itchy lately. We switched from her special hepatic food to homecooked again (lower protein). The vet said we should do this because of the itching. Well, Ellie is still very itchy tonight and has been on the better food for two days. We were told that we could use benadryl (twice daily instead of three times so her liver has more time to process it). This is not a solution but just an experiment to see if the itching is allergies. Anyway, the children's benadryl we have has sorbitol in it (Ellie has taken it before). From my understanding sorbitol is an artificial sweetener and could be dangerous. All liquid benadryl might have it in. What do I do? |
Okay, I see it is somehow related to Xylitol. I am sure that is a nono. Hmmm... |

Does ellie have liver issues? |
Well, I am going to guess it is okay since I see it in Beneful and doggie toothpaste. Thanks anyway guys. |
Yes she does. Her bile acids are elevated (postpranial 47) but has no diagnosis yet. |

I've only administered it to pups with normal levels and me not being a vet, I would recommend that you go by your vet's advice. Levels are not extremely high, the diagnosis could be anything from food, to MVD |
Yes, but only to see if it is an allergy. We will go to topical antiinflammatories if the itching persists. She didn't want to resort to any meds like this but I am not sure we have another choice. |

Layla has been taking Bendryl because she has HORRIBLE allergies... i give her 1 ml .. because she weighs 5 lbs... twice a day.. it makes her tired but it stops the itching and her watery eyes... i hear it is HIGH allergy season... i am doing this because i know if i take her to the vet he will probably put her on steriods which i am completely against... hoping we can mainting things on our own.. in the past few days she has stopped itching.. give it a try... it will give her some relief!!! Children's... liquid... dye free |
Winstin was at vet yesterday and has been itchy. She said to give him 2cc of it. I only got 1cc in him and it helped. He is also only 4 pounds. Plus he had a bit of a reaction to his second shot so she said to give him benadryl yesterday since it was his third and he did not get sore at all. |
