UTI from what???? I didn't know where to post this but being that GiGi has had a reoccurance of UTI just a month since her last bout of it I had to ask this question. Can a dog get UTI from having their annal glands expressed:confused: . GiGi is 5 1/2 years old and has never had UTI or any other internal infection. In May I took to her old vet for her annual check up (we had vets switched for a couple of years). For the first time at any vet visit the vet raised the question of whether she need to be expressed I said I didn't know but that I don't see any prob with her pooping. So he checked it out and said she needed it. After it was done I still didn't see the NEED to have it done. Since then she has gotten UTI 2x's. I am not to vet crazy lately and am pretty ticked off now as I am beginning to think the some of these vet are more pranksters than healers. Tina:mad: |
I have absolutely no idea if that can cause a UTI but I wouldn't think so. I hate to be the barer of bad news, but I guess I should just get it out there. Ellie had a UTI this summer. We went through antibiotics. Something still wasn't right. It came back or never really went away. We went back to the vet and they couldn't get a urine sample this time. The vet did an xray (no stones) and put Ellie on a stronger antibiotic. Everything seems pretty well back to normal. Here is the problem. With the two UTIs (or one that wouldn't go away) and a few other symptoms some people said I should have Ellie's bile acids tested. I did and something isn't right. Moral of the story? If your Yorkie has more than one UTI please have their bile acids tested. If you already have, that is great and it is probably just a stubborn infection. |
I just started to give her the meds yesterday and already she is fine. But yes I will keep a close watch on her. And yes I am praying that it is nothing more than a stubborn infection. All else seems to be fine with her. Tina |

Thanks for the info.....GiGi doesn't have any of those signs. But I will freek out if she needs more meds after this time. They actually cut the prescip tion in half. Only half pill once a day instead of twice. So I am hoping that this is all she needs. Thanks Tina |
BTW is a bile acid test done with blood work or is it done another way. Tina |
A bile acid test is usually a blood test. I think it can be done with urine but that is very questionable right now. You just fast your dog for 12 hours (overnight) and take them to the vet for a blood draw. They feed a high protein meal and draw again 2 hours later. The normal results are premeal: less than 10 and postmeal: less than 15 or 20. Ellie's postmeal is 47.:( |

My Lady has uti's all the time. Usually when they come back it quickly it means they never really went away in the first place. Did your vet do a sterile culture to find out what kind of bacteria was causing the infection? If not, the antibiotics he gave her probably didn't didn't clear it up. Lots of times vets will guess and prescribe an antibiotic that works in most cases, but if it doesn't work, it should be followed up with a culture. 80% of all uti's in both dogs and humans are caused by E-coli. Unfortunately, there is no one antibiotic that can kill E-Coli as it has become very resistant to drugs. Lady had an E-Coli uti this winter that took months to clear up. We just kept trying different antibiotics before we found something that worked. It turned out she had two different strains of E-Coli and needed two different antibiotics at the same time. |
When I first brought her to the vet for UTI I asked him if her kiddneys etc were normal and he said yes all is alright just an infection. So I thinking anything further at this time is too much. Thanks for the concern;) Tina |
What are you feeding her? Bc sometimes diet can play a part in recurrent UTIs (like in humans). Poor honey! |

I was just about to ask what food she was on too, my Gucci was 10 weeks old she kept having them a month apart and we did every test my Vet thought to do and everything came back normal and I changed food and she has not had no since, and the food she was on was Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice so no more of that food will be brought back into this house! |
Dogs can get a UTI from any bacteria that enters the urethra. Do you wipe your dog after she uses the bathroom? If so, that's not recommended b/c that can cause it too. Also, if dogs are like humans in this area, once they (we) get a UTI, getting them again comes much easier. :( |
No i don't wipe her...she gets it all out when she goes. It is possible that something in the grass might be doing it cause going back a year or two she was having bouts of bile coming up when she ate grass. Being that the grass is not always mowed where we walk "sometimes" maybe something is getting inside her. She weewee's in the grass if it is there...otherwise she goes in on the street/sidewalk. I will keep that in mind when we walk.....during the summer I stay away from grass cause of fleas...I only do about 2 applications of fleas control per year. That has been working for us. I just think if the meds are working so soon (the same day I gave it to her-yesterday) and 1/2 the prescrip she was on before....it is a good sign. I had asked the vet first time if it could be anything else and he said no. He must have done some checking...plus we just had xrays and nothing is out of place etc. Tina |

The woman who sells free and clear is a very good herbalist, I would call her and talk to her and then discuss your findings with your vet to see if you can use these products to help prevent them |

I feed them the Innova adult.....it just says adult dog food....white and green bag. What is EVO. The dog food is dry. I don't see her drinking more water but she does drink a good amount but I am home 5 days a week during the summer so I am walking them more. They drink water whenever we go out as soon as they come in. As far as the Berry Black I will look into it but I am going to finish the meds first. She has 8 days more to go. Let's keep our fingers crossed and I will surely look into changing her food. Maybe this is just a temporary thing...I really hope. She has been thru enough for this year. I hope she gets better very soon! when Gucci was having her probs she started peeing blood and that freaked me out! but I know it has to be from the food she was on then, I now feed Chicken Soup for the puppy lovers soul.. they have been on it for over a year now and have done great. |
I forgot...one of the tests that vet took when we first went to him for the UTI in August was an ultra sound.....so not being well educated in what needed to be done to check cushings I am pretty sure he did all the necessary testing under the circumstances. I don't think he covered all the test for cushings but I think he covered enough to be able to determine that what she had was an infection. Tina |
Same here! We also fed all four of our yorkies the Nutro Naturals Lamb and Rice, the small bites. My two girls had UTI's, and had crystals in their urine, I had my boys urine tested and they also had crystals! What are the odds that all four would have them? We switched foods and after several months the crystals are finally gone. I personally think it was the food. |
