my poor baby max just got his ultra sound done yesterday they need to do a biopsy because they could not clearly see a shunt or if its mvd so what is the best thing he could have out of this is it the shut so they can remove it also the doctors told me that he has a heart mermer and they told mee all the things that could happen to him going under im so scard his so tinny does any one have any advice |
i'm so sorry this is happening to your baby. my suggestion is to make sure you take him to a specialist to have the ultrasound done and the surgery done if needed. with something like this i wouldn't let a regular vet do it becuase they lack the experience in critical care. good luck and i hope it doesn't turn out to be a shunt. |
I don't have any advice but I will say prayers. |
Max is in our prayers. I'm sure lots of people on here will have some good advice for you. |
Thanx For Ur Prayers |
Get well soon baby max! Love Zoey:animal36 |
My Biewer has a heart murmur but had an ultrasound before being spayed. She weighed 2.4 lbs. at the time which was 8 months old. They did take extra precautions but knew what they were dealing with because of the heart ultrasound. She was fine and stayed overnight. They must disclose all possibilities to cover their hide. I would still go the specialist route if you can in Max's case. I will keep both of you in my thoughts and prayers. I know how stressed you must be. Jessica |
Wishing for the best. Keep us posted. |
thanx every one im getting so nervous just knowing what can happen the good and then THE BAD  so what is it that you hope a shunt so it can be taken out or mvd |
if it is a shunt and they take it out will they be back to normal see the vet told me things that can happen after surgery like they can stat segering and stuff when i take him down in 4 days i will get to take to the surgon also does any one have a dog with mvd or who had a shunt how is life with them after u get used to all the med does he have a normal life and is there life expecany still the same if u keep there meds under controll :animal-pa |
They don't "remove" a shunt...They put a ring around it that closes it off little by little. Also, it's very important that they do a liver biopsy while they are in there so that you can know if Max also has underlying MVD which many dogs do have. That's why it's so important to keep Max on the special food, lactulose and supplements for months, maybe a year after the surgery (if they repair it). A couple of months after the surgery(if they don't find MVD), you need to have another bile acid test done to see if the numbers have gone down to normal. If the numbers have gone down to normal, then great, that means the shunt was closed off successfully, but keep in mind that 15% of dogs develop aquired shunting due to the pressure... If your dog has MVD, the dog needs to stay on special diet, lactulose, and supplements for life...because I know you've mentioned how bad his symptoms have been. I know of a dog with MVD who lived to be 17 yrs old...So, yes, they can live a normal life too as long as you keep them on their special protocol. |
thank you so much for telling me this info |
Praying and sending love... |
