Does anyone know anything about allergies?? My poor girl has horrible allergies.... they were VERY bad around the end of june... and just in the past few days they have returned again.... very watery eyes... she has been chewing on her paws.... i think tomorrow i will have to cave and give her some children's benadryl. i hate to see her suffer. Do any of you have allergies??? or do you know what season it is for whatever causes allergies?? in june i i know it was the dandilion fluff.. but i have NO Idea what is causing it now.... |
I don't know for sure, i guess it would depend on which pollens bother her. Otis has allergies and is on hydroxyzine twice daily. I don't notice any sedation, but it certainly helps his licking and scratching. It doesn't take it away completely. The thing that surprised me is that he is 3 yrs old and this is the first year he's had this problem. My vet said it was like hayfever that people have. She also said that being outside doesn't make it any worse (which kind of confuses me). I'm hoping after the first frost he won't have to be on the pills anymore. His eyes are very watery and he does try to rub them sometimes. Good luck with Layla! |
My Cali has terribel allergies and I have had her tested and tried benydryl and meds the vet gave her and she still scratches all the time. This time a year hayfever is bad until the first frost. I hope you can get her some relief |
Marci, I had my Maltese, Jack (RIP), blood tested for allergies. the results were quite informative. I found a vet to do it and I think it cost around $110. It was well worth it. That was around 7 yrs ago and I don't remember exactly what he was allergic to but he licked his feet after he was outside. He was white with little orange footies. I hope Layla is better soon. J |
Could it be her diet? Britney used to itch herself like crazy when I fed her Royal Canine. What about her shampoo? |

I have to agree with Yorkiemom...an allergy test might be very helpful so you'll know the irritant that's bothering her....I hope you get to the bottom of it so she can get some relief..... This link gives some food for thought..... http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/petallergies.htm |
You seem to be doing all the right things, so you might want to get her an allergy test. |
Interestingly, Marcel has recently started, again, to itch at his eyes. Remember that Nutritionist I recently had a consult with? Well - just for giggles, I just went to her site to see if she has any allergy products - and this one actually looked pretty interesting: http://www.askariel.com/product_deta...Allergy_Relief I have a follow-up w/ her in the next few weeks - and I will ask her about this too....but I do like the looks of that product. Plus, it looks like it treats some causes rather than symptoms, which I love. |
I thought the same too, about homecooking but had blood tests done anyways and boy were we surprised of the stuff that came up allergic. It wasn't the typical wheat, soy, corn etc but instead common foods like peas, carrots so you just never know....these darn blood tests are so expensive though. |
When my Layla had watery, itchy eyes, the vet told me that would most likely be caused by something she's inhaling, whether it's dust, smoke, or any particle of anything basically. Harvest is going on now, are you near any fields? Even if not NEAR, I'm sure there is a lot of stuff floating around in the air this time of year. Even I have been having some allergy symptoms! |

my poor girl... i finally had to cave and give her benadryl today... she is itching so bad and her eyes are so watery.... i feel just horrible... i hope the snow comes soon!! |
Oh poor Layla, that must be so uncomfortable for her :( I hope the allergy test helps to clarify what the problem is xxx |
Hi there, I'm so sorry about your little girl. :( I know how hard it is to watch them suffer. My pekingese Snoot has the seasonal allergies. The summer is a terrible time for him. He just sneezes like crazy and licks his paws sooooooo much. I think in another month Layla should start to feel better. Atleast this is when Snoot does. I also hate giving benadryl but it does help some. He pretty much sleeps the day away. :( Hugs to little Layla. I hope she feels better soon. ;) |

Hi sure hope you can get Layla some relief soon...poor baby! My Sailor struggles with allergies - she scratches some much and is losing hair. We started with shots every 2 months with our old vet....and by about 6 weeks she was miserable again. So with our new vet he started over - first with a shot - that lasted about 4 weeks - so the vet gave her another shot at a month but also put her on Medrol pills. These pills do help more than the shots, but she is sleepy and tired when she takes them. The new vet said the next step is allergy testing he would do at his office. We are trying to give the pills a little more time, but this week has been very bad again. (The last time we took her in she had one spot that was very inflammed and the vet was worried about that spot getting worse.) Our new vet also says these are seasonal allergies and with all the different weather we have had this year - alot of dogs without a history of problems are having issues this year. (We are in Tx and have had alot of rain!) Let us know if you find something that works well for Layla!! |
