Hope the test will be repeated and all will be fine. If the levels were really high...the vet should have told you before hand, as it would make her a more surgical risk. With that being said...what were the actual numbers? ALT is part of the liver function...BUN is part of the kidney function. Winston's ALT was a little high at 76, normal at my lab is up to 67. Normal BUN is up to 38 and Winston's was 18. He had the bile acid test done, which was post meal a little high at 27.2...pre meal was fine at 1.9. Both of his vets confer, this is a normal test...insignificant findings. Sure wish the very best for Zoey, don't worry about it too much...just repeat the same test as suggested, and do a bile acid test to put your mind at ease. |
The ALT was 156 The BUN 34 |
That is a little bit too high for comfort. Please get her bile acids tested just in case. |
I would highly recommend a bile acid test for your Zoey in this case. |

She has been through so much. I hate to do anything else to her for awhile. What do the have to do to test bile? PS. Zoey hasnt pooped since she got home. She fasted from 9pm Sunday night to almost 6pm on Monday. She has been eating and drinking normally since Monday night. Lots of pee, but no poo. So this is 48hrs with no poo...Im ready to pull my hair out! |
An accurate bile acid test consists of an over night fast of 12 hrs, a blood draw, then they feed her, 2hrs later, they do another draw... If you want to wait to do the BAT, then if I were you, I would feed her a low protein food like Natural Balance Vegetarian or Avoderm Vegetarian for a month, and then do the bile acid test. Make sure she hasn't received heartworm pill or flea treatment within 1 week or more from the date that you do the BAT. If the numbers are elevated, then you know there's an issue in her liver that was not caused by a high protein diet, heartworm pills or flea preventative... |
Good post Yorkieluv. I know it is hard to see our pups go through a whole bunch of tests/vet visits but we really need to know what is going on to help them. I hope everything will turn out just fine with Zoey. |
I agree...the bile acid test is fairly simple and reasonably priced. I'd do it again, just for the peace of mind...it's worth it. |
:hands: I will pray for your baby, hope everything goes better:aimeeyork |
