oh wow! :( thats terrible. poor doggie thanks for the info. |
That's not true. I have seen several dogs that have taken Rimadyl and none of them died... I've seen a lot of older dogs that take it every day for their arthritis |
There ARE dogs who have very bad reactions to this. My yorkie almost died while on rimadyl with only 2 days of having taken it...He was extremely lethargic and vomitting profusely...He had extremely serious side effects. While the majority of dogs who take it don't have side effects like this, I can tell you that my dog did... |
Yes, there can be side effects, but what she posted about it's being "dangerous" or highly likely to cause death is BS. Just do the research yourself and you'll see. I know of at least 20 dogs that are on this and zero issues in each save one who gets an upset tummy from it from time to time. |
I agree that 90% of dogs who take it don't die and that is an extreme exaggeration, but people should be made aware of the possible side effects...I wouldn't be sharing my experience with Miko right now if he wouldn't have become so incredibly ill while on this medicine for only 2 days...It was the scariest thing I had ever seen. |

Yorkiluv, I understand your point and I'm glad that you caught the problem in time so that it didn't have a more dire end result. I'm just saying that percentage wise, all medications have side effects. MANY dogs, the vast majority of dogs that use this product don't have a problem w/ it. Few do and your pup was one of the unfortunate few. Hey look, I got pregnant while using OrthoTricyclene! I know that prescriptions have their faults/"side effects" w/ some users! ha ha :p |
Every medication has a side effect, however, Charlie took Rimadyl following extensive dental surgery for inflammation. He was fine but you have to monitor your pet whenever antibiotics, etc. are administered. Thanks for the post though because it created an interesting and informative conversation. Deborah |
My groomer suggested this for my older Standard Poodle who has arthritis but I read a lot of bad things about it so instead I decided to try the holistic approach and tried this stuff called Run Free that I mix in her food and it seems to be working well. |

LOL :) Well, congratulations on your bundle of joy!!! I've seen pictures on other threads, and your baby is a doll!! |
I remember my other vet....(the really BAD one I was using for my other dogs) saying he'd only use Rimadyl as an absolute last resort...... |
ha ha, THANK YOU! She's a great little girl, very quiet and cuddly and is now 5 months and doing so many things now. *anyway* It's good to remind everyone here that while considered safe, you should closely monitor your dog for the first few hours especially for an allergic reaction/side effect to ANY new products or medicine administered. |
Hallee took it for several days before she went to the specialist for her torn ACL. She had no side effects and is doing just fine. That was end of July. |
Rimadyl is a commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory. The hospital i work for gives it regularly to our patients and very rarely do they have a problem. The side effects that do occur are usually lethargy or vomiting. There are long term side effects that have to do with the liver i believe, which is why, if your dog is going to be put on it for arthritis at a maintenance dose, he/she should have a blood test done before put on the medication and every 6 months afterwards to monitor levels. And just like any medication, these side effects only occur in a small percentage of patients. just like someone said before, when i'm discharging patients and going over medications i remind them that just like any medication for people and dogs, each medication can cause upset stomach and should be given with food. Also if this is the first time your dog is getting these specific medications, please monitor his/her actions/bathroom habits/eating/drinking for a few hours after given the medication, as this is when most side effects will occur. |
