Warning...Bella's Night of Explosive Diarrhea & Projectile Vomitting What a night we had...first it started with my son forgetting to tell me that Bella had vomited in the morning before I left for work and then when I returned home from work, he forgot to mention that she had had about 5 liquidy stools during the day... grrr! So, off I went to my craft club and when I returned there was an array of piddle pads with poop stains on ALL of them like polka dots...yuck  ! Questioning him further...I learned that she obviously hadn't been feeling well all day long...kids, grrr! Well, from there on out...I was up with poor Bella ALL night long, every hour on the hour she was going from both ends. It's been so long since my kids have been little I forgot what "Projectile" vomiting could be like...not fun :( Funny thing was that she would jump into the shower to do her duty...yuck...but, it was a lot easier to clean up that way, too. I think I bathed her bootie about 20 times last night! Needless to say...we were parked outside the Vet's office as soon as they opened! Lucky for me...she did all her tricks for the Vet to see for himself...ick! She lost 1 lb 3 oz from all that business, too! As much as I really didn't want to leave her...I knew she needed the IV hydration and the meds to cool down her stomach plus, I'm so exhausted I literally feel like a walking zombie...not a pretty sight  For now, the Vet is having me call back at 4 o'clock to see how she does with the hydration and than he'll decide if we need to send out her blood to check into other things. For right now, he's suspecting that she might have ingested an insect or poison...the latter is what I'm really worried about since our neighborhood has been plagued with rats with all the new building of houses in our area...scary:( Has anyone had experience with rat posion? I was just wondering what the symptoms would be. Her diarrhea was soooo foul smelling and so was her vomit. Infact, her stools and her vomit were really "grainy", too...almost like "sand"...does that sound odd? Oh well, if anyone has any thoughts...I'd appreciate hearing any! Please keep Bella in your thoughts today...:aimeeyork |

A few years ago, my neighbor's dog picked up a rat to bring to the back door to show her...and that was it for Princess...she was gone within 24 hrs. Turned out, that the Telephone company, would hang rat bait on the lines to keep the rats from chewing on them (lines). |
Just wondering if the appearance of the sand-like grainy grit in her vomit is an indication of anything....oh well, I'll run that past the Vet this afternoon when I call back. Thanks for all your well wishes...I really appreciate them:love-hug1 |
Oh poor Bella and of course poor you, not getting any sleep can put a damper on your day. I am praying and hoping that Bella is okay and feeling better and that they are able to find out what caused this. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your Bella. Keep us updated! |
I hope that Bella will be just fine, poor baby~! Keep us posted:love: :hands: Prayers on the way! |
I hope she will be ok, it is so hard when they are sick. We will keep her in our prayers. |
A Bella Update.... Well, I called the Vet's office at 4 o'clock and the nurse told me that Bella had been sleeping :dogzzz: most of the day. They gave her two injections as well as the IV for hydration. The vomiting has ceased...yeh...but, the diarrhea continues...ick! So, our Vet called me this evening to let me know that because she's still straining and having diarrhea he's going to keep her overnight, continue IV hydration, send out her blood, and see how she does tomorrow. He said they attempted to feed her tonight...she refused at first but, with some coaxing she did eat a little...and then promptly let it all out. I was kind of surprised that they would feed her already...oh well :scratchhe He's said he's kind of leaning towards the idea that she may have ingested an insect :bee: but, wants the blood results to make sure nothing else isn't missed. Has anyone here ever had a dog eat a bee? Thanks again for the well-wishes & I'll update on my amazing (explosive) lil' Bella tomorrow... |
Mine have never eaten a bee....but I think Diggy's career of choice is exterminator. He eats anything that moves in the house. He is so good he can catch a fly in mid-air....then chomp chomp chomp....My kids yell ewwww Diggy ate another fly, I always say oh well a lil extra protein. I guess I never though of the fly making him sick?? Its not like I encourage it, nor can I stop a fly from sneaking in. I guess I will have to get a fly swatter??? I pray Bellas poo gets firmer and she comes home all better! |
Sorry poor Bella is feeling sick :( Armani sends kisses! |

Grit like substance in his lower intestestines. Hospitalized for four days.Vet was pretty sure it might have been the nyla bone he had been chewing on or the pesticides that was put down a couple of days before his illness. I thought of rat poison also around the garbage sheds but vet said he would have died and not survived from eating that. Does she chew on these types of bones? Praying for a complete recovery. |
A Bella Update.... As of this morning, our Vet has assured me that Bella is a lot better this morning and actually ate her breakfast w/o coaxing and she has not exploded from either end since yesterday...so that's good news! Her bloodwork came back looking good (including her liver) BUT, she does have High Cholesterol...:scratchhe which is kind of funny since she doesn't eat anything but her Eukaneuba breakfast bisquit in the morning and the dry food...but, it's possible that it could be genetics...have to remember to ask about that. Anyone know about High Cholesterol in Yorkies? So, now I'm just waiting to see how she does the rest of the day and Bella should be good to go by tonight...yeh :cheer: |
Oh good, I'm glad Bella is doing better! Sorry, I don't know anything about high cholesterol. |
Glad she's doing better. I have never heard on high chlosterol in dogs. Please keep us posted. |
I feel your pain...Reece was sick for a day and a half just like that..I was up all night with him..giving him pepto and lots of water..even though sometimes it wouldnt stay down...he did alot better on his own and thank god it didnt go to far that he had to be hospitalized...I was close but he started feeling better on his own...keep us posted!! Dawn |
SO glad to hear she is feeling better - it sure sounded scary at first. How is she doing today? Btw, for high cholesterol - you may want to get her on a flax supplement, that could help quite a bit. |
I am so glad to hear that she is doing better! Please keep us posted! |
Update... Granted this is overdue...oops! My adorable Miss Bella did make a full recovery from her situation back in September and was back to normal within a week...full of vim & vigour :animal36 Fast forward now to February...and I just found out what was the probable cause of her ailment after a discussion with a neighbor. Just a little background...our neighborhood has been fighting a losing battle with "rats" which have been making homes in our attics...yuck! I recently had to call a pest control company out to help us when an odor was coming from a bathroom wall from a dead rat! Being a considerate neighbor, I spoke personally to my neighbors to inform them of my plans with the rat bait stations, etc especially in regards to their animals. After speaking with the husband and wife next door to me, I learned that they've also been battling the infestation as well. Well, during the conversation...his wife slipped out that her husband would place the rat poison "pellets" on the top of our adjoining fence for the rats to eat while they ran across it!?!?!?! It's funny how it came up in the conversation because, I mentioned how I hadn't seen their dog much anymore and he said he had to keep her on the other side of their yard in a dog run to keep her from catching rats due to the health risk to her. Unfortunately, neither of them ever thought to inform me of this and wouldn't you know it...this is the fence that my darling Bella was used to running up to to give kisses to their dog every morning through a little knot hole in the wood...guess what else she must have got...yep, a rat poison pellet! His wife, I think thought I might have implied that the stink in our wall could have come from the pellets they had been using but, she quickly reassured me that these particular pellets when ingested by the rats will not make them stink if they die in a wall in your house. So, needless to say...I am amazed again at how hard it is to just call up your neighbor or even knock on their door when you're planning to use a pesticide that could impact pets in the area:confused: In the end...I could have snapped and gone postal on them but, instead I decided to educate them on what can and probably did happen this past September to Bella and why it's not such a great idea to place poison where he did...geez! |
