Sick puppy? We have a 11 week old puppy named Odie. We have had him for 2 weeks now. When we got him he had kennel cough and some kind of intestinal parasite. He has been on medicine for a week and a half ad seemed to be getting a little bit better but tonight for some reason the little guy seems to be sick tonight. My kids gave him a few little pieces of the pot roast they had for dinner. He was fine until about an hour ago. He as thrown up a little bit of liquid 4 times now and he keeps gagging. It’s almost like he has the hiccups his whole body jumps hes still trying to play. And when he relaxes it goes away. I wake him up to make sure hes ok and it comes back. We are getting worried about the little guy. Anyone have any advice? |

:yeahthat: Great advice! Also, the hiccups may really be hiccups! Gizmo gets them frequently, and I've been told that's normal. Welcome to YorkieTalk. You will find a lot of helpful people here who know almost everything there is to know about Yorkies. (Someday I hope to be one of them, but I'm still learning. ) |
Welcome to YT, and being that you already brought your pup to the vet, I'd give him a call and let him know whats going on. It might just be a normal thing. |
hes on Clavamox and Torbutrol. He woke up this moring feelig much better but hes still coughing so it looks like were going to take him back to the vet today. Thanks for the responces |
Kennel Cough is a bear to get rid of. It took Lucy two full weeks of antibiotics to get rid of it and then still she would hack every now and then. I hope your baby feels better soon! |
Poor baby, Definately no table scraps. Believ me a learned the hard way too many times. It is so hard to resist their little faces. The tprbutoral may be upsetting his tummy too. It took me 3 months to get rid of the kennel cough when Cali had it and then gave it to my other dog. |
I agree with the pot roast. I gave Babybear some about two weeks ago and he had the runs for 4 days after that but he also threw up the night I gave him the pot roast. I will only give Babybear boiled chicken for a treat when I eat now. I keep some boiled for him and my other two furbabies. It is very hard not to give treats to the kids when you are eat and even hard to get a child to understand not to give it also. Heck my skin kids are 18 to 21 and I still have to give them heck about giving the table food to the furbabies. His tummy is still probably upset because of the meds also. It sometimes takes a while for them to get used to it and by then they are off the meds. Hope your little guy is felling better really soon. And before I go Welcome to YT. You will find a great bunch of loving people here that put their heart and souls into their furbabies. And for good reason. These little yorkies are just a joy to have as companions/babies. |
He went back to the vet and they did some xrays and said he has a drug resistant form of kennel cough. They have now put him Codene and Vibramycin. They said that this could kill him and that if these meds didnt work that they didt think there would be much else they could do. Anyone ever heard of it being this hard to get rid of? |
I'm sorry to hear that your baby is so sick...If I were you, I would try starting a new thread on this topic. I hope you get the answers that you need... |
Kennel cought cannot be cured by medicine. It's like a cold and has to just run it's course. I'm afraid of all the meds the baby has been taking may make him worse off. Don't give him what your eating, but real food is the best that's for sure, but it's made different, sort of bland. If he doesn't get any better in about a month, I'd have the Vet. run a bile acid test on him if the seller didn't. |
Thanks again for all the replies. He was supposed to have been vacsinated for kennel cough. We cant find anyone that can supply his codene. After his first dose of the the other stuff today and being off the others he hasnt coughed once. It has only been about 8 hours but its much better than he has been doing. |
We too learned the hard way - Squeaky does boiled chicken really well but cannot eat beef. We gave him a small piece of roast beef - he got sick - throwing up and stuff and we ended up taking him to the emergeny clinic. They put a fluid sac under his skin and put him on a bland diet of Chicken and rice for 2 days. The same thing has happened with steak, steakums, etc. We no longer feed him anything from the table because of his sensitive stomach |
