Teething, vita k, stool questions ?? Gizmo is ...dang...almost a week and a half short of being six months old. He is teething ferociously...tongue moving constantly in his mouth, not wanting to bite down, bats his ball around instead of picking it up in his mouth, etc... We also had the rat poison scare last week, and he's still on the daily vitamin k supplements and will remain on those for awhile. He was treated by induced vomiting, activated charcoal, and a vita k injection at the time. He is not eating very much at all. He'll eat soft pieces of chicken (if I handfeed) but isn't touching the hard kibble. His urine is very yellow, and I have been assuming it's the vita k. Now I'm reading that vitamin k is stored in the fat cells. Would it still cause the very yellow urine I'm seeing? Over the past two days, he's had two strange combo stools. Some of it is firm and some of it is a yellowish liquidy mucous. I do NOT see blood or anything black in it. Is this teething, the result of eliminating the charcoal, vita k side effect? If I had seen blood, we would already be at the emergency vet, but I haven't. Do you think this can wait until tomorrow morning? Thanks in advance. :) |
Well, can you tell me if teething will/may cause partially mucousy stools? |
poor little man.. i say YES to all of those things... his poor little system must be very messed up..... does the vet know he isn't eating much?? but taht might be because he is teething... oh the poor little guy... .the loose poop could be a fluke too.. he may have gotten into something ... could be the vit K.... could be everything!!! how much longer for the K?? cna you wait to see when that is done if things clear up?? give him a big hug and kiss from Layla and I |
Bless you for responding! :) He's feeling more energetic this afternoon, but still not eating. I even broke down and bought some Caesar's!! He won't touch it. I found a tooth yesterday and one fell out in my hand today while I was cleaning his teeth. They both look like back teeth, so I think it's related to that. The vitamin k treatment will continue until a week from Thursday as a precaution. I will call the vet first thing in the am, and give Gizmo some homecooked chicken and rice tonight and see if he eats it. Should I do anything else? |
Do you have Nutrical?? i'd be giving him some of that for sure. you can try anything really... see if he will eat something soft like yogurt or cottage cheese... no chewing involved... apple sauce... peanut butter.... will he eat his treats?? (That's how i know JUST how sick Layla is :p) and i'd say if you can't get him to eat anything by tomorrow just call the vet and see if this is a side effect of the K or else it is just he is feeling crummy because he is teething (they are like babies like that) Layla for the most part was ok when she was teething but she had days when she slept the whole day and woudln't eat. Can you give him a wet wash cloth that has been in the freezer for a bit?? that should feel nice on his gums... you might also want to try baby food... try the veggies. they have less stuff in them to keep them fresh... dont' go overboard on ANY of these things because they might upset his tummy . let me know if any of the food works! |
He will eat yogurt drops, but I don't want to give him too many of those, and he ate a couple of table spoons of cottage cheese, so I don't think we need to worry about his sugar levels. I will try some other soft foods. The cold washcloth is a great idea! Thanks! |

I think he probably just has an upset digestive tract. When a dog has poop with a yellow mucous around or in it, it normally means the intestines are irritated. Lacy's poop is normally a yellowish-brown color (i guess because of her raw diet), but it's normally not mucousy. She has had an upset tummy before and had yellow mucousy poop before and she was fine the next day. So far as the concentrated urine, it could have something to do with the rat poison, vitamin k, lack of eating, and lack of drinking enough water - it just sounds like he's a little underhydrated. I would just give the vet a call in the morning and keep an eye on him to see if anything else develops. |
Wow! You are right on girl! That's almost word for word what the vet said. :) Yep, a little dehydrated. My husband is working on that today. Thank you so much! |

He drank more water today. Hubby put ice cubes in his water dish, and he drank away! lol He's not spoiled is it? :D He also had a normal poop. :woof: (I can't believe I'm celebrating because of poop! Oh well, any excuse to party! :D ) |
Update Gizmo is doing very well. Yay!! He has had solid poop for two days. He ate enough food today to make up for not eating for the past couple of days. His urine is back to normal, and he seems completely back on track with hydration. We are continuing the vita k tabs and will until the prescription is finished (week and a half from now). No spots in his ears or on his belly (tell-tale signs of internal bleeding). I was also very impressed this afternoon! The emergency clinic that treated Gizmo for the poisoning last week called to check up on him today! :D  I am VERY glad to have such a wonderful place here in Waco. :) |
