Post Surgury Questions My little Yorkie went in last Friday to get spade and microchipped. The surgury went fine and the vet did a great job. However there are a couple of things that concern me. 1. Is that she is not eating anything and drinking small amounts of water. 2. She is acting like she is scared. They have her on Rimadyl for the pain. However I think this might be what is making her act the way she is. Also they sent her home with one of those cones to wear. Does anyone know how long she should wear it? The nurse at the vet told us 10-15 days. She hates the thing and won't even move when it is on. Any information or advice anyone can share would be great!! Thank You. |
When was she spayed. Jewels wouldnt eat the night we brought her home also she shaked. She was okay by the next day. I would put a baby onsie on her rather than the cone |
The pain meds probably have her whacked out along with the cone. I would take the cone off when you can supervise her and only put it on her if you have to leave her alone. Getting her to eat something is very important, maybe try giving her a spoonful of plain yogurt or cottage cheese;) Healing thoughts sent out:love: |
The surgury was on Friday and we brought her home on Friday night. When we got her home on Friday night she had some water and then just slept. Saturday say ate some food and had some water. Although yesterday she didn't eat much and only had a little bit of water. We have only been using the cone at night since we have been around during the day. However I am affraid that she doesn't drink or eat anything. Then she will just lay in one spot all night long. What is a baby onsie? |
A baby onsie is a one piece outfit that babys wear sometimes to bed. They have snaps on them. You can find them at walmart or target usually where they keep the blankets. You just cut out a hole for the tail |
I will check out the baby onsie that might work better. The cone is just a little too big for her. |

When I had Lex Neutered the cone had him very depressed. He fought it ever step of the way. So I removed it and he went back to being Lex. I did watch him to be sure he didn't bother the sutures. I think you have a combo going on there of the cone and the meds. How long are you giving the meds? Lulu and Lex both were given pain meds for 3 days after the surgery and no more. |
I think the cone is really upsetting to them. I'd go for the onesies too. |
Well they gave us 25mg tablets that we divided into 4's. We are on day 3 of the meds and we are suppose to give it to her for 5 days. That seems a little long to me. I would like to take her off that stuff. It is really hard to tell if she is in pain or not. My wife is going to take her in this morning to see what the vet things. Because I guess she should be eating like normal and she is not. |
Instead of a onesie how about putting a diaper on her? |
She probably doesn't need the Rimadyl anymore...That might be what's messing her up. My yorkie had a bad reaction to it... |
Yeah I am thinking that she needs to get off it as well. I am going to wait and see what the doctor says. I might just take her off of it myself. |
What a difference!! Quote:
I just had my baby Destiny spayed? last week Tues. She had to stay at vet overnight. She was microchipped and had 13 baby teeth pulled too. Day of surgery she only weighed 2 lbs 11oz!! Dr suggested IV to keep her fluids and sugar up due to her size. How big is your baby? The Dr discussed pain meds with me and gave me her honest opinion. Dest appeared to be a little uncomfortable, however, not in any kind of pain. So Dr said no pain meds! I was like what? She just had major surgery! Well the thing is with these lil guys is the dosage. She was too small to give her anything reasonable if it was not absolutely necessary. So we decided to go with no meds unless I saw that she was suffering or crying. Dest has been just fine. Her stool was loose for a couple of days and even a little bloody. Vet said could be normal and clear in a couple days, or could be parasite brought on by stress. Her poop is normal now. She was eating and drinking (a little less drinking than eating) same day she came home. Soft food at first, now she eats anything and is even playing with the bully sticks!! She is doing really well and even trying to jump on and off furniture!! There was no cone or any kind of bandage put on her. I have been home everyday with her though. She has licked the incision a little but I would just stop her. Now, she doesn't even pay attention to it. Sorry so long! Just thought I would give you some info on how my vet did things and how Dest is doing. Hope all is going well with your baby. In my opinion, I would really talk to your vet about still needing pain meds. Maybe she will start eating if she is taken off of them. Good luck and you will both be in my prayers. Please PM me if you need any other info! Take care! ;) |
our dog weighed 4.9lbs at the day of the surgury. She also had to have baby teeth pulled, but only 2. The medicane that she is on says 2mg for every pound. So she is within the legal limit of the mediciane. I just think it is not working good for her. |
I think a diaper would be fine. My Vet gave me pain meds for 3 or 4 days but I only gave it the day after the surgery |
Also you might fix her chicken and rice to eat |
I am going to take her off the pain med first and see if she eats then. If not then I will make her some food to get her going again. |
i found that my dogs didnt need the pain meds after the first day or two. plus i think they tend to try to do to much because they dont feel it. |
Suggestion: If she is shaking or crying, then she needs her pain medication to reduce the swelling. Call your vet if you are not satisfied or still have questions. Warmly, Deborah |
She has never cryed or made a fus about it. I talked to the vet this morning and she said just keep her on it for a couple more days. I guess it is really just asprin for dogs and not a pain med. I guess I will wait see how she is doing in the next couple of days. |
Each pup is different following surgery. When Angel was spayed a few months ago, we needed to keep her on the pain meds to keep her activity levels down. She ended up with an infection and a red, angry/oozing incision. Because of all of that, we had no choice but to use the cone as it kept her much more still. She ended up being on pain meds, antibiotics and the cone for 10 days till she was better and then the stitches came out finally!! |
I had them do the laser procedure so the healing time is suppose to be better. It has been 3 days and the incision looks great. I check it every day just to make sure things are good. I see what you are saying about keeping them on the pain med it does keep them calm. She has been getting a ton of sleep in the last few days. |
I bought some onesie's but I am not sure how they are suppose to work. There is no way for her to go to the bathroom. So do I have to cut a hole or leave that end open or something? I know a few of you have done this before so I am open for ideas. |
I didn't have to put the cone on Venus, cause she didn't lick the sutures. But Adonis did lick, and his got mild infection, and I HAD to put the cone on him....oh he hated it too! Would not move, and shook too. If they put the sutures in that dissolve on thier own, licking them can make them dissolve before they are healed, is what I was told. My vet didn't send pain meds home with me. After that 2ond day, both were acting like nothing ever happened. |
Rimadyl is anti-inflammatory and helps with the relief of the swelling in the tissues from the surgery. Good luck. PS Glad to hear your vet advised to keep her on the meds. She shouldn't be suffering. There is also a cone that is made of plastic fabric that is very nice, although they will get used to the cone if it is fitted properly. |
she seems to be doing okay with the cone she just limits her movement. She doesn't whine or shake when she has it on. She will just lay there and do nothing. I just would like to do something different so that she can be a little more comfortable. |
