When do I stop worrying about LOW SUGAR LEVELS?? my little guy is 5 months old and he now weighs 2lbs 7ozs. He eats fine and is doing well so far. I always keep fresh water out for him night and day and Royal Cainine Dry Puppy food also. Has he doesnt eat alot at one time, but keeps going back once and awhile to eat bits here and there. When do they stop being vulnerble to Low Blood Sugar? When do you stop leaving out food and water at night, say at what age? I am clueless at the moment. Need help! Take care katharine |
I think you can quit worrying, as long as he is eating OK. Puppies under 12 weeks do not have the ability to store sugar, that is why it is such a worry when they are young. But at 5 months, they should be fine, unless you have a problem with him eating. |
I agree with Jeanie. At 5 months old he should be ok. Since he's a slow eater having food out all day should prevent him from getting low blood sugar because he always has food available. |
It sounds like you've received some good advice :) As far as nighttime is concerned, I don't see any reason why you need to pick up the food and water. You can make it available for your puppy at all times. I know whenever I used to feed Miko dog food, I used to leave it down for him all the time. Sometimes, he would get hungry in the middle of the night, so I always left food out for him. Also, I feel like water should always be available for them. |
thanks everyone, I just thought about the potty training thing, someone told me if he has food and water available all the time he will have problems holding his bladder and the poop for when he should go out. Right now he is pee pad trained and my Kitchen floor occassionaly :) He has had problems with his tummy from time to time because I would guess he is small and sensitive to things. I worry about the sugar levels sometimes especially when he lays around abit, but my husband said he might just be tired or the weather when its abit warm or maybe just because he doesnt feel like playing and being himself. I will leave the food and water down unless the vet saids otherwise. thanks everyone!! |
Well they always are in the back of my mind with my fur butss being so small, but to actually stop treating them as they have it, I stopped at 14 weeks with Diggy, he was HORRIBLE from 8 weeks until 12 weeks had major sugar drops followed by seizures but Id say at 12-14 weeks they are "out of the woods" but I have neevr really stopped thinking about it. When I know Bella and Diggy are going to bed for the night and will go without food for 6-8 hours I hand feed them some kibble, but thats just me cuz I'm Paranoid Paula!!! lol |
You're doing the right thing by making sure they have food and water available at all times. Miko had low blood sugar problems until he was at least 16 weeks old. |
I just had Lucy at emergency on Sunday with an $800 vet bill. They did every test imaginable but only found low blood sugar and dehydration. I still don't know how that happened since I watch her like a hawk but you can bet I'll be paying even closer attention. She is 5 months old and weight 3 lbs. and other than that she is extremely healthy and active. I always have water and food out for her. She can hold herself now at night and on the rare occasion she needs to go she will nuzzle my nose to go out. |
