HELP! vomiting, shaking & panting- No reason for symptoms
 

:(I posted before, but the message disappeared???

Our 2 year old Roxy Girl woke us up at 6:ooam shaking, and panting. (NOT a seizure) She is a mess. She will not leave my side. At one point I could not find her and she was hiding in my closet on top of the uncomfortable shoes - something she has never done before.

I read in another thread that the shaking and panting are a sign she is in pain. I wish she could talk and tell us what is wrong.

Roxy does have a history of seizures since she had been 2 months old, but they are totally under control. She takes Phenbarb. twice a day. She just had her levels checked and they were fine. So I don't think this is related to that at all. Plus she has never acted this way before.

She has vomited yellow bile one time.

My 10 year old son can't stop crying, and to top it all off I called the vet to take her in and found out my vet (a partner) left the practice! The other vet said he is very busy but I can drop her off and he will see her as soon as he can!!I will not leave her, she is going through enough! I am taking her to a different vet who said we can come in at 3:00pm. It is only 1:30 now one hour until we leave.

If anyone has ever been through this please tell me!

I feel for you. I can't help but I hope your 3:00 appointment comes fast.
Don't you just wish they could tell us what was wrong? It does sound
like she might be in pain. Have you checked her out good like her paws,
ears, mouth etc. Maybe she stepped on something or a tooth is hurting.
Sorry I'm not more help but finger's crossed that the vet finds the

Yes, I have checked everything on Roxy. I pray it is something small and harmless. She is really doing bad though. I have to stay calm for my son because he is freaking out!
Roxy is in between my feet right now. She has NEVER done this in her life. She must be in terrible pain.:(

How sad for both of you. I wonder if she swallowed something and it
is lodged somewhere causing her discomfort.
We'll is alittle past three and your at the vet's.
Finger's crossed that all will be ok.

I feel for you, I know how worried I'd be. I'm looking forward to you letting us know that she's fine...praying that she is.

The vet took us right in which was very nice. Roxy has a fever. The vet said heart & lungs sound fine. Took a lot of blood to check her liver enzimes, white and red blood cells, etc. So of course I really know nothing more than she may or may not have an infection. They sent me home with antibiotics and I have to wait for the test results.
When my son asked the vet if everything is OK she said, "Lets hope so."
Oh boy.
Roxy refuses to eat now. Not even eggs. She did drink water though. This really stinks.

No clue. It seems she (it was a woman vet) didn't want to take a guess until the bloodwork comes back.
She did coment on the Phenbarb. having side effects on the liver which I never heard. But would that cause a fever, shaking, panting? Who knows? I hope that the results come ASAP. It's very frustrating. Oh, I gave her the antibiotic when we got home.
My husband just yelled that she threw up again. He said he didn't see the pill in it.
I wonder if she is going to be alright. I wonder if I should take her to the hospital.

Wish I could be of more help to you. Hopefuly the pill disinagrated and got
into her blood stream before she threw up so she has the meds in her.
I guess the best thing to do is keep a close watch on her and made
the decision to take her to the hosp if anything else occurs. The meds
need to kick in. Could she have gotten into anything poisonious?
Hope the night is a good one.

If it were me and I were that concerned....yes, I would take her to the hospital. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Sure hope they figure out what's going on soon.

Thanks for the vet recommendation. I live in Atlantic County, 5 minutes from Ocean City. If worse comes to worse I guess I could drive up there. I would rather stay close, though. The vet I just went to was 20 minutes away in Mays Landing. Not too bad of a drive, but I wasn't crazy about the Dr. I guess because I just wanted an answer as to what is causing the behavior

Wow I really hope nothing is wrong. My prayers to Roxy and you. I had buzz vomit yellow bile on me this morning but found a strand of my hair in it. He gadded two more times after that. He seems ok now. Did roxy maybe swallow something that is giving her a tummy pain?

I'm so sorry to hear about Roxy...Yes, phenobarbitol is VERY damaging to the liver and can cause all sort of problems for them...Maybe they can put her on potassium bromide instead. I'll be praying for Roxy!!! Keep us updated.

Is your yorkie moving around like normal. One morning Hallee woke me up vomiting yellow bile(3 times), she was shaking, but not panting very much. She was not moving round very much. She would not even respond when I called her name. Glad we got her to the vet because her blood sugar was low. The vet had to put her on an IV.

I am so sorry to hear about Roxy, I hope she is feeling better. Please keep us posted!

It's going to be a long night. Roxy threw up the yellow bile again. A whole lot this time. I think it could be the antibiotic upsetting her stomach more then it was already.
She still is panting and shaking which is from the fever. I decided not to take her to the hospital. I called the vet again and they assured me the fever is causing all the shaking and panting. If she is still like this tomorrow, I am going back 1st thing.

I will have to ask about the potassium bromide. I wonder if it is OK to switch her up after 2 years. Her seizures are pretty bad and they come one after another once they start. I will keep that in the back of my mind after all of this other stuff is taken care of.

Sorry she is feeling bad. Pixie was sick last week and I took her to the er vet, weren't sure what is was but she was much better the next day, The antibiotic they gave her metrodrozinale ? also settles their little tummies. I hope she feels better in the morning.

Morning update on Roxy........

:( She had a rough night, we kept here in bed all night. I was afraid she would try to jump off and get hurt because she was so weak... no sleep and she was very restless, panting, changing positions, shaking, etc.

:) She is much better this morning! Fever must be gone because she is not panting or shaking at all anymore. She ate some eggs mixed with her wet and dry prescription Hills L/D food. :)

:( She is still moping around, not herself at all, but considering how bad she was yesterday and last night, this is a major improvement. I will update when the test results come back. I am guessing it is an infection because I gave her the antibiotic last night. It must have kicked in.

:confused: Patti--My vet gave Roxy 250MG METRONIDAZOLE 2 times a day, like you. You said it calms their tummy. I hope so because Roxy threw up a couple times last night after I gave it to her. I am waiting a little until she digests her food to give her morning pill.

:D I am so happy. It seems as though she is over the roughest part. :thumbup:

I just did a search on Metronidazole. These things alerted me. This is the reason I hate giving or taking drugs. Unbelievable!

Precautions
• Metronidazole causes birth defects in laboratory animals. It should be avoided in pregnant animals, especially in the first trimester. Some metronidazole is excreted in breast milk, and it should not be used in lactating animals.

• Metronidazole should not be used in young puppies and kittens.

• Metronidazole should be avoided or used with caution, at reduced doses, in animals with kidney or liver disease.
Roxy has MVD

Drug Interactions
• Metronidazole is reported to elevate prothrombin time in animals on warfarin or other coumarin anticoagulants.

• Cimetidine can interfere with the liver's ability to break down metronidazole and the dose may have to be reduced.

• Phenobarbital and phenytoin may increase the metabolism of metronidazole.
Roxy is on Phenbarb. 2 times a day!!!

Overdose
• Dogs and cats: Symptoms of overdose of metronidazole include the gastrointestinal signs (anorexia, vomiting)
and neurologic signs including depression, ataxia, disorientation, head-tilt, tremors, bradycardia, rigidity, stiffness, and seizures. Neurologic signs may occur due to acute overdose although they are more commonly seen in animals that are on long-term moderate or high doses (oral doses greater than 66 mg/kg/day). Signs of chronic toxicity often begin 7-12 days following the start of treatment. After the drug is discontinued, it may be several days to two weeks before these neurologic signs begin to diminish.

I am so glad she is on her way to feeling better.The medds will also make them a little more sleepy.

The test results came in-
Some good news:)
They think it was caused by an infection. I told them they prescribed her an antibiotic that is not supposed to be taken with Phenbarb. They said they were sorry and gave her amox. (for a charge of $15.00!!):thumbdown

Some bad news:(
The vet said Roxy's white blood count is elevated.
Also her Liver value is high at 252.
They said it could be due to her taking the Phenbarb for the last 2 years.
I am picking up all of her records and getting a 2nd opinion tomorrow in Ventnor NJ with Dr. Walk. The vet needs to be familiar with liver disease in Yorkies.

:aimeeyork Roxy is doing much better now. She is licking us and jumping up on the couch with us again! She even barked for her treat after she did a pee-pee.

Wow, I didn't realize Roxy had MVD...She definitely should not be on phenobarbitol then...It's sooo taxing on the liver. Potassium bromide is what they recommend for liver compromised dogs...Is she taking any supplements like sam-e(denosyl) or milk thistle. These will really help her liver. Does she take lactulose? Lactulose is key in helping a dog with liver disease. You definitely need a vet who is experienced with this kind of liver disease.
