Yeast in ears - any suggestions I gave my boys baths Friday night and I think I got water in their ears. They are both scratching at their ears a lot. I tried to dry them as well as I could. I'm hoping they don't develop a yeast infection. Are there any home remedies for this or will I have to take them to the vet for the ointment! |
I don't know of any home remedies but Gucci has a tendency to have yeast in his ears. The vet recommended cleaning them out once a week with drops (DermaPet MalAcetic Otic) to keep it in check. I don't think the drops were expensive. They smell like vinegar so I don't know if that could be a home remedy. I would do a search online maybe. Just a few days ago the scratching increased and he needed an ointment for the itching and inflammation. |
Did you get the drops at the vet or online? Will I need a prescription? |
i bouthg ear cleaner online at petedge and it says it is best to use after swimming or a bath which would make me think it that helps in preventing any infection that the water might cause. you can get this stuff at petsmart tho.. i think you can get stuff especially for after swimming to put in their ears. |
A home remedy for a very slight yeast infection, recommended by my groomer, is to mix white distilled vinegar and alcohol together and put a few drops in the infected ear. The last time I took Roxie to get groomed, the groomer said that Roxie had a slight yeast infection. I used the vinegar/alcohol method on Roxie and it worked. But if your boys are really uncomfortable I would recommend going to the vet. I now use Vet Solutions ear cleaning solution every time Roxie gets a bath. I hope your boys feel better soon! |
My Molly got a yeast infection in the ears when she was young. I took her to the vet for medication drops, ear cleaner and they also removed the the hair out of her ears. Sounds like they may be passed the preventive homeopathic stage and need to see the vet. Hope you babies are feeling better soon. |
I bought the ear cleaner at my vet's office. They recommended it after confirming through a cotton swab test that it was in fact yeast. They sell it on their shelf without a prescription. Also, they have two kinds, one is a general cleaner and the other (named in my earlier post) is for yeast. I think I will probably need to use it diligently with Gucci once a week after it clears up. You might want to get it looked at to see exactly what it is so you know how to treat it. |
Thanks everyone. The boys are no longer scratching at their ears. I don't think it's turned into a yeast infection. I'm keeping a close eye on them. Thanks for your help. I'm gonna get some of the stuff for after bath use. |
