Gracie has luxating patellas, ? surgery? I took Gracie to the vet today and had my suspicion confirmed. She has bilateral luxating patellas, worse on the right than on the left. The right one pops out of place with extension, which is why she protects it only when going down stairs. The left one is much milder. The vet recommends x-rays which have to be done under anesthesia. About $400. Then a radiologist and orthopedic surgeon review them and the surgeon gives recommendations. Surgery if needed will be around $1500. The orthopedic surgeon will come to our vet hospital and do the procedure there. The vet said it is best to do the surgery while they are young. Each time the knee luxates it causes cartilage damage, which means arthritis down the road if it is not fixed. If I want Gracie to have a quality life later, she may need to have surgery before she is 3 years old. This is such a bummer. I know many of you here are going through the same thing. That helps somewhat, but this is still upsetting news. I so wanted her to get through life without anything major! |
oh i am SO sorry to hear that... poor Gracie. I've never been through this but i know many on here have... just wanted you to know i' thinking of you a little Gracie.. she will do fine and hopefully wont' have anymore problems!! |
I'm sorry about the news but it's something that's fixable. That is how I try and think of it....once the surgery is done, she'll be as good as new. Sounds like your Vet is right "on top" of everything... |
Hallee is going through the same thing. She is only 2 or will be in August. We see ortho specialist on MOnday. If surgry is needed it will be done that day. I am just worried sick about this, but want her back to normal. Will see what happens on Monday. Will be posting more next week. |

Gracie and Hallee Prayers going out for Gracie and Hallee. j:) |
I am so sorry to hear about Gracie and Hallee. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Get well soon! Hugs from Roxie |
I agree with Yorkiemalt. Sounds like your Vet is GREAT!!! I too have been down the LP road. Let me tell you that with Roxy, what a difference it has made in her life to have surgery...SHE IS A NEW GIRL!!! It's amazing, she's got so much more confidence  |
Tink didn't have LT, she has Legge Perthes disease, but she did have to have surgery to remove the ball of her hip bone. It was horribly expensive, but now she is running around like nothing happened. The only time you can tell is when she stands still and lifts that leg that doesn't have a hip joint anymore. Just two months ago! She is 10 mo. old. I hope your little babies will weather the storm and be good as new after their surgeries. I think you'll be glad you did it. They won't have near the pain afterward.:) |
