Still not peeing after surgery, Is this normal? Need Help ASAP!!! Bailey had surgery to remove 7 bladder stones 13 days ago. He is still straining and whimpering when he pees and he is trying to pee in the house which he never does. He always seems to think that he needs to pee. Sometimes a little comes out, sometimes nothing comes out. This morning he would not eat and was whimpering and would not even try to go. He would just stand there and look at me and whimper. I took him to the vet this morning and left him there for tests. The vets office just called and said that he was walking around and had peed and that nothing was wrong with him. I know that something is not right! When he is home, he tries and tries to pee and whimpers like it hurts. This is the third vet who has told me that nothing else is wrong with him. Is this normal behavior 1 1/2 weeks after bladder stone surgery? I just have a gut feeling that something is wrong but I've run out of vets to get another opinion from.:( I need to know from those who have had this surgery for their babies if this is normal. I am so worried!!! |
I don;t have an answer for you but I hope he gets well soon. I am so sorry that you are going through this time. |
I don't know what to tell you but, I just wanted to say I hope everything turns out alright for the little guy. He HAS to have pain...the poor little thing! Did your vet tell you this was normal? Seems to me if after this long he should be feeling better, and not having pain when he is peeing. |
Oh boy....That's always a tough one. What kind of bladder stones did they remove? Miko had a hard time after his bladder stone surgery as well...He would not walk for over a week by himself...He didn't want to pee, he didn't want to do anything. You know your baby better than anyone, and if you think he's not right, then something is not right. Maybe he still has stones or has formed new ones...My yorkie continuously produces bladder stones, so he had to have surgery to re-route his "plumbing". He now pees out of a new, larger pee hole so that he can pass stones when he does get them. Do they have Bailey on any meds right now? |
He's not on any medication. They said to continue to feed him the W/D and that he would not need to be on any medication. I can't remember what kind of stones they were but I am going to write it down when I go pick him up. I had half of a pain pill left and I gave that to him this morning because of the whimpering. I am going to speak to the vet in an hour and I am going to make sure I talk to him about that. Maybe he is not whimpering there because of the pain pill. I think that I need more pain pills to give him. He peed on the floor there in the office and they didn't do a urine analysis because they said there was no point!!! I want a urine analysis done to reassure me that he doesn't have any crystals blocking his urethra. It just seems to me that it would have been a given to do a urine analysis after I have complained that he is having trouble peeing still. This is my third opinion and they all say the same thing but this just can't be normal. I just know it!!! |
Let me know what kind of stones they are whenever you get back from the vets...Has Bailey been lethargic at all? Miko had a horrible reaction to the pain meds after his surgery...He was very tired and was throwing up and had a hard time getting better because of the pain pills. |
Mickey peed right after his surgery , it hurt to do, but he could pee. after a week he was peeing like normal. It sounds like your little one is still having troubles, I would make them do another xray just to make sure, They cant refuse you of that. It would help ease your mind one way or the other. I will keep your baby in my prayers, I hope nothings wrong, Poor little guy. |
I'm so sorry for your baby to go through this. :( I don't have any advice for you and I'm sorry. I'd take him back to the vet to have him checked though, it seems by a week and a half, things should be resuming to normal. Give him many hugs and kisses! |
Depending on the type of stones that Bailey has, you may need an ultrasound because x-rays don't pick up all types of stones. |
He's doing much worse than yesterday. The vet said that everything looked fine. He is the best in the area but I'm just not satisfied with his answer. He said that Bailey is not healing as quickly as he should and that he is having pain whenever his bladder begins to fill up so he is trying to pee every few minutes to prevent the pain. This is why only a little comes out or nothing comes out at all. He decided not to take out his stitches even though it has been two weeks and gave me some pain medicine which is mild but should allow him to let his bladder fill up before he tries to pee. Well ever since we got back form the vet's office yesterday, he has gone downhill. He will not eat at all. He will not even eat chicken when I try to feed it to him. He will not even take a single step. He just sits there and looks at me with dull glazed eyes and kind of sways back and forth. The stitches have really been bothering him and the skin had gotten red and really puffy. It looked like the stitches have dug into his skin. I couldn't take seeing my baby like this anymore so this morning I took out the stitches myself. The incision looked healed but it looked like the stitches had cut into his skin. At first it was like someone flipped a switch. He rolled over and started playing with hand and making this snorting noise he does when he plays. They he started rolling all over the bed like he does when he is happy. So I think I made the right decision. It didn't last long though and he soon went back to the way he was before. They did an x-ray but everything looked okay. Would they not have seen any additional stones during the surgery? I want them to do a urine analysis and look for crystals but I can't collect any urine. I just can't take this. My baby is dying right in front of me and I can't do anything about it. The spark is gone from his eyes. Today he will see a fourth vet and hopefully I can find something out. |
An x-ray won't necessarily show stones/crystals depending on the type. Your baby may need an ultrasound. My yorkies stones/crystals don't show on an x-ray, only on u/s...I'm so sorry that Bailey's soooo sick. Keep your chin up. Pm me if you want. |
I am so sorry that this is happening to your baby. If I were you I would go to a university hospital if noone is qualified around you. Get better Bailey. |
Could it be a bladder infection? |
Well I finally have some answers from the fourth vet, Dr. Harbin in Manchester. Yes, Kim you were exactly right. He ran a catheter to get some urine and said that he had a very bad bladder infection and he is having a severe reaction to the sutures internally and externally. He was on antibiotics after the surgery but they were not strong enough. I did the right thing by removing the stitches this morning. The first three vets told me that the stitches looks normal but I knew they didn't!!! Dr. Harbin put him on strong antibiotics for the bladder infections and suture reaction and gave him a shot as well to get the medicine into his system as quickly as possible. He said that we just have to take it one day at a time and that this is something that we may have to fight for awhile. |
Oh, poor you and your poor baby! I am SO glad you finally got some answers and now your little guy can get some real relief. :) Thoughts and prayers in abundance headed your way. Hang in there! |
