Vaccine reaction 3 days later? Gizmo had his last DHPP vaccine on Wednesday afternoon. About an hour ago he had a bout of diarrhea. After I cleaned him up, he peed on his pad and then laid down in it! (He has never done that before.) Now I have another pad on the couch and he's sitting on it right beside me, snuggled next to my thigh and won't play. He just looks like he's worn out. I plan to give him a little boiled chicken and white rice later. Right now I'm just encouraging him to drink a little water since I don't want him to get dehydrated. I plan to watch him for awhile. If he's not better in the morning, I'm going to take him to the after hours vet. If he gets any worse, we'll go tonight. Am I doing the right things? Is it possible that he's having a reaction to the vaccine three days later? |

Thanks, I will do that and continue to watch him. I appreciate your advice. |
Medication from the shot can stay in his system for a couple of weeks, and yes, the shot probably is responsible for him being sick. I've had dogs in the past who reacted the same way. Maybe give him some weak broth. I do hope his sickness doesn't last long. |
poor guy! I agree....it's probably from the shot. I think the broth and/or some chicken and rice is a safe bet. |
Thanks everyone. I appreciate it. |
He is sleeping. No more bouts of diarrhea, but no eating or drinking either. This is usually the time we get ready for bed, so I will keep him on his regular routine and put him in his bed/playpen in a few minutes. There is water and a little bit of dry food (Innova puppy) as usual in his playpen. He likes to eat in the middle of the night sometimes. My husband and I will be checking on him every couple of hours during the night. I'll update in the morning. Thanks for your support. |
ohhh Judy I missed this thread....how is Gizmo????? Oh I hope he is feeling better!!!! |

Thanks for asking. I'm starting to feel a little easier. :) |
Just checked on Gizmo. He seems much better. He is cooler to the touch, so I wonder if he had a fever earlier. Also, he seems to have some of his "sparkle" or "energy" back. (Whatever that means...very intangible, but the best description I can give of it.) Okay, back to bed. :) |
Good morning all! Gizzy was rather frisky when he woke up. :D He still hasn't eaten any solid food, but I'm not pushing it. He drank about 1/4 cup of broth and now he's sleeping again. I think we're out of the woods! |
Ohhh I hope so! Diggy ate a Jalepeno Pepper last night so he pretty much barfed it all up and layed around most of the day. He is acting fine now just tired...The pepper was off Pizza and no seeds so thats good. And he never chewed it up, when it came back up the pepper was still a soild half ring. I cannot wait tol he gets out of the eat everything in sight phase....its so hard! |
Poor Diggy! I hope he's feeling better now. Gizzy's back eating his dry kibble with no problems. Thanks for checking. :) |
So glad to hear your baby's back to normal...Those vaccines really can take a toll on their bodies. |
Thank you. :) I'm just glad this was the last one for awhile (this was his 4th DHPP) and that I put off the rabies until next month. I'm just sort of surprised that it was just this last round he reacted to, and that he was fine the day or so after, and then it came right out of the blue. I had no idea it could happen like that. |
