Beamer's dry Ear Hello everyone. I visit the boards from time to time and find alot of useful information that helps me with making my pup happy. There is one problem that I haven't found a solution to. Beamer gets this black gunk in one of his ears and I clean it with some meds the vet gave me. He ear sometimes gets real dry and crusty from him scratching at it all day. Sometimes he cries at night cause I guess it bugs him. Has anyone else come across this problem?? Is there anything else out there I could use to clean his ears?? He has some stuff deep in his ear that I can't reach with a q-tip. Is there anyway to flush it out?? Thanks in advance. |
I have an old bottle of Foaming Sensitive Ear Cleaner by Animal Dermatology Laboratories that I used on my precious Chester who had the same problem when I rescued him. It may be a yeast infection, which is really difficult to clear up. Anyway, I'm not sure if you can buy it over the counter, you may need to get it from a vet, but I do remember it working very well. Try not to use Q-tips as that only pushes the "gunk" further into their ear, making the problem worse. The stuff I have you squirt in their ear, massage for 30 seconds and then wipe out the ear with a cotton ball. Most likely, the dog will shake its head, which is good, the inertia causes the stuff to work its way out. Best of luck to you. PS - Smell the dog's ears. If it's a sweet smell, I can almost guarantee it's a yeast infection. Make sure your vet gives you something specifically for that and be very diligent about the medications. Again, they can be very difficult to get rid of. |
Thank you for the response. I have checked Beamer's ears and they look normal again. I have set an appointment with the vet to get him checked out. It usually happens after I give him a bath. Do you happen to know a good way to block water from getting into his ears? I'm sure not all the water will be blocked off but some is better than none. I have heard that water in the ears is what causes those ear problems. -Maria |
So glad Beamer is doing better. I know my great-aunt had ear problems and always put a cotton ball in her ears before shampooing her hair. Might be a little more difficult with a yorkie, but it's worth a try. Also, be sure to dry them out very well after a bath; maybe even blow-drying lightly. Good luck to you! |
Well, bad news. My sister in law was taking care of Beamer over the weekend and gave him a bath. His ear infection came back when I got him back. It always happens after a bath. Poor baby. I cleaned his ear and put his cone around his neck so he wouldn't mess with it. His vet appt isn't until the 3rd of Aug. Hopefully it gets better. Yorkies are so sensitive :( |
