Can STRESS cause such Problems??? My 4 month old yorkie has the Diarrhea, sometimes it has blood in it. His tummy makes sounds like it has Gas and then out squits the Diarrhea. The Vet gave him Reglan & Metronidazole and he is on a diet of soft food called *Prescription Diet A/D & I/D plus his Royal Canin Dry food. He doesnt want to drink or eat sometimes while taking these meds. The Vet did stool tests for Parasites and PARVO but they came back Negitive. So why is my baby still sick? I have only had him 1 week and he seems to enjoy being with us, but he gets sick. CAN STRESS really cause such GI problems and if yes, what should I do? He sometimes plays and jumps around and barks, like he was never ill, then he goes from being good and playful to laying around not responding to nothing but sleeps alot. Any one have this problem or even heard of it. Katharine |

I'm surprised no one has answered you...I'm new here so I'm not really making to many comments...but I can tell you YES stress can cause all kinds of problems...these little guys are soooo small and it doesn't take much to make them sick...when they are soo young..as they get older they get better...When I got Quincy he had the diarrhea for a few weeks..my breeder told me to give him kayo srurp...spelling....and so I did..just a little and he finally came around. You know I hate to say this..but sometimes breeders know more then the vets do on Yorkies because they deal with so much..I know that my breeder had to teach her vet a few things...but he also taught her so many things..and in return she has given me so many helpful hints...sure someone will come answer your question...*s*...hope your baby starts feeling better soon..*s* |

Yes, stress can cause digestive track problems. I had a show girl that would be find Monday through Friday. But, Saturday and Sunday before ring time she'd get a case of bloody runs. Took her to the vets and nothing was wrong with her, he diagnosed her with show stress. Prescribed flagyl for show weekends. Starting on Friday - Sunday I gave a 1/4 tablet a day. Worked great. |
Sounds like you've got the right meds for it. And yes, stress can be a cause, according to our vet. Ozzie had two bouts of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE) in four months time requiring hospitalization. (once in November, again in February). This condition is not just runny poop, though it starts as that. It graduates to just straight blood. (If you've never seen this, I hope you never do.:) ) It's one of the most unnerving things I've ever experienced. We have a bottle of Metronidazole in the cabinet now and he gets half a pill if he has exceptionally soft or runny poops for more than a day. After the initial illness, he was also on both flagyl and Pepcid. These guys have such incredibly delicate digestive systems sometimes! |
had a similar problem when i first brought my little one home, the vet blamed it on the breeder saying she wasn't dewormed properly, the breeder blamed it on the change of water... |
Yes, stress can cause problems with their tummies. Magic has had this problem since she was little...anytime there is a change in her routine she stresses herself out and gets sick. Our vet just prescribes us some meds to keep on hand to use when we start to see the signs. This stops if from getting worse right away. Adjusting to a new home can be very hard on this little guys and sometimes it takes them away to relax and start eating regularly. Do want your vet says and if it gets worse or your little one won't eat contact him right away!! |
I would take a sample in and check for coccidea and giardia just to be sure. They have to REALLY look for these two and it can be missed really easy. Give him nutrical/nutristat or kyro syrup if he has the runs...you want to keep his blood sugar up! |
Thankyou everyone :o) Thanks for the help. I can honestly say I dont understand how my breeder can say she never saw this in my Murphy. She has had him twice now helping him through his Kennel cough illness and she told me she never seen him have diarrhea, or bloody diarrhea. I picked him up on saturday and he had diarrhea right off the bat. I contacted her and she said it must be the stress doing it. Well he must stay stress then cause its a week and it has not cleared up, not a bit. The Vet was great with us. I have 2 stool samples tested and they came back negitive and I am about to have a 3rd tested this week. The Vet said he had Colitis and he is on meds. I just want my baby well. ever since I got him he has not been in good health. He is such a sweetie I love him and just want whats best for him. If stress causes this, I dont know how to stop it, does this mean my baby will always be sick all his life? Katharine |
Not necessarily. It could also be a bug, or something he picked up off the floor. (At least that's what the vet told us.) But lots of EXTRA love and reassurance certainly can't hurt.:) Mine loves the coddling when he's not feeling well. |
yogurt w/live cultures help sooth digestive track & help diareah. I would do a round of albon 5% for cocidiosis just incase, it is a parasite over grown when stressed causing usually a spot of blood & mucus in the stool. i get my albon on yahoo shoppping the 2oz lowest price, i cant remember the store-I find it by searching, anyways...It is a antibiotic & should help with what ever, follow dosage recommendations. Then just keep the yogurt going daily. jmo. I hope your baby is better. |
