HELP!! Vomiting & Diarreha ...After Vet Vist
 

My Baby Murphy was feeling fine the other day and today he is laying around not wanting to eat. He vomits clear liquid and has had Diarreha since real early this morning.

He went to the Vets yesterday and she gave him a vaccine DHP Parvo Corona and I did ask if there was any side effects to this and she told me not really only that he would probably be sleepy. Hmmm whats made him sick then? She also changed his food, she gave him a different soft food to eat.
called (prescription Diet canine AD)

I am just sick with worry, as he weighs only 1lb 13ozs. 4 months old. The stress will make me ill soon, as I worry about him so much.

Any hints, ideas, or suggestions? I am ALL EARS and EYES :(

I would call your vet and tell her that he is doing both.
It could just be (and probably is) that his shot is making him sick but you need to watch it with a tiny one. You need to make sure that his intake of fluids is good and that he is not getting dehydrated.

Call your vets office so she has a heads up in case he needs to be seen and remind them how small he is when you call..

please call your vet. Diarreha could be from change in food.

Hi again its me ..the worrywart

I feel so silly sometimes but this is my first Yorkie Puppy and I dont have a clue about somethings. I worry about him all the time ever since he was real bad sick with Kennel Cough over a month ago, and he finally got better and now this happens. I just want to cry.

I called the Vets Office and she said bring him in this afternoon because he is small and cant afford to nnot eat or drink. I gave him some Kayro syp. and it was a struggle to put that in his mouth. He looks afraid of me now. :(

Someone told me not to give Kayro because it alone can give the dog the runs...is this true? Have I just made him worse? Honey was suggested.

How much do you give of any of it. I just put it on my finger and rubbed it inside his mouth. How often should I do this? How much is too much?

I am so worried I will make him worse, he is my baby and I love him dearly.

A little bit of Karo is not going to make him worse. How long has it been since he has eaten? My little girl was just a tiny bit bigger than your Murphy and she had to fast before getting spayed, she was fine. When you take him in today if he is still sick the vet will probably give him some fluids and that will make him feel better.:) If he starts sliding downhill just go to your vet and tell them you want him seen now. They will fit you in between clients if you are sitting there.
Try not to worry too much, he will be ok.

You shouldn't ever feel silly about worrying about your kid, you are doing the best thing by taking him in.

It is so scarry when your baby is sick. I agree about taking him to the vet.
You did right by massaging a little Kayo on his gums. Also A/D can cause loose stools. I must have missed something(whats new) but why is he on A/D?

I checked his gums and they are pink and alittle blueish towards the top, mostly pink tho.

The Vet gave him A/D so he could gain some more weigh as he was real sick around a month ago with congestion in his chest from Kennel Cough. The breeder had him on Hills Science Diet Puppy soft food, but he doesnt seem to like it too much.

Thanks for the info on A/D, I did not know it caused loose stools.

The Breeder gave me a little list of things he can have, Yogurt 2xs a day, or cottage cheese, Ricotta Cheese, Boiled Hamburg and Noodles, Mac & Cheese, Puppy Formula with Chicken baby food, if he doesnt want to eat at times.

I offered him most but he must not really feel like eating because he turned away and went and layed down :(

He doesnt drink either but I try to dip my fingers in his water bowl and he licks it a few times then stops.

He was fine yesterday, so I am thinking it was the vaccine that made him sick, I will keep you all posted and thankyou for the replies. As I said before I am new to this and I will need all the help I can get.

Aww I hope he gets better soon. It's terrifying when they're just not right. I'd definitely take him to the vet. I'm not much help, luckily Lexie had no reactions to shots...not even sleeping. I take that back, the rabies made her a little wookie. Anyways, hope he gets all better soon.

I know how scarey it is when they are so tiny and so sick. I agree that the shot probably made him sick. I never knew this, I just found out last week, that they give the same dose to have Big Dog as they give to Little Dogs! It made me so mad to hear that :mad:

Anyway, b/c he is so tiny I would bring him to the Vet and let them give him fluids. My TJ was very sick when he was young and tiny. I used to put Pedialyte in a syringe and force it down. I also would give a tiny bit of boiled chicken and I would drizzle honey on top.

:thumbup: :thumbup: I agree ....due to his size it's better to be safe than sorry and they can really dehydrate very easily at this young age (and size) ...poor baby - I hope he feels better and when mine were little - boiled chicken and white rice helped with tummy problems. I hope your vet was careful in the shots - these little dogs cant be treated like their larger size counterparts...in the future - you could get the shots spaced out over time instead of all at once

Just got back from the Vets Office, and she said he probably got sick from the vaccine, she gave him a very small dose, but now she sees how he reacts to it, she will have to really rethink doses. She did not give Fluids because he is not dehydrated.

She also gave me some Nurtical to give to him but not much, and some Medicine called Diarsanyl for small dogs, its to help with his tummy and coating the intestinal tract, so it can ease the Vomiting and Diarreha. Well she gave it to him in the office and when we got home, he threw up. I believe its the car-ride when he isnt feeling good.

I feel bad for him, he just lays there and picks his head up to look at me even when I hold him.

You have a problem that is common among yorkies
 

actually two problems.
Changes in diet can cause digestive track upsets. It is best to do a change when everything else in their little lives is status quo that way you can tell if food change is cause.

When pups go for shots it is common for the vet to give them a few at a time but with Yorkies it is often too much for their little systems and they can go through 3-5 days of "flu" like symptoms and dehydrate very easily.

This has happened to me and now I will go to the vet for the pup checkup and to start the shots series. I will pay for all the shots needed at the time but will only let him give one shot at a time. Then I wait 2-3days and if no "flu-like" symptoms come up I go back in and get other shot. It works great that way. If they get upset system at all it only lasts like a few hours to 1/2 day.

I honestly believe small dogs shouldn't be given multiple shots in one vet visit.

I just want to cry to be honest. My Murphy has been through alot in the little time I have had him. The first time I had him it was for 9DAYS then I had to return him to the breeder under my Vets reccommendation because he was so sick with complications from Kennel Cough. The Breeder had him for 1 month and Nursed him back to health.

He seemed fine when I picked him up on Saturday, he went to the Vets on Monday and got a vaccine and he got sick from it (Vomiting & Diarreha) well he seem to feel abit better yesterday he ate and played...Today he is again sick. He tried to eat but threw it all back up, his little tummy was making some really gassy sounds. I also noticed when he poops, its mushy and there are some bright red blood droplets mixed with clear liquid in spots on his pee pee pad too.

My friend said her dog did that but it was because of the Diarreha and that the blood being bright means it does not come from the internal, probably more irritated nearer to the rectum.

I am waiting for the Vet to call me as I write this. I am so sad within me because of my little baby. I hate to see him suffer with anything and things dont seem to get better and I have not had him that long.

He is 1lb 13ozs (4 months old) Are their stomachs this fragile>? I just wonder will he ever be ok and live to play happy. For such a little guy he tries to stay on top but something always seems to get in the way.

I am heartbroken, I could never just give him back...I love him so much.

UPDATE about MY Murphy and the VACCINE Sickness!!!
 

I spoke with my vet this evening about our Murphy, and she told me because of his size that doing a bloodtest would be very hard or impossible at this stage. She wanted to put him on some more antibotics but said he has had so many, she would wonder how he would cope. I have decided to return to doing what the Breeder did and not to listen soley on this vet.

I am not giving him this Canine A/D softfood because the Breeder has him used to another brand, and I was told changing his food could upset his balance and make him sick. The vaccine she gave him did not help matters as he got ILL from it all.

Tonight I just put out his Royal canine Dry food and water, he has been playing and eating and drinking loads ( I never seen him drink so much ) but I wont complain because he used to not drink at all. He seems like a new pup at this very moment. How he will be tomorrow is another matter, but maybe this will help his tummy to get back to normal..and his poop will return to normal and the Diarreha will go away.

I read from other YT members that changing Food and vaccine combo can upset yorkies systems. So I am going to see how things work out just trying to get him back to the way he was when I picked him up from the breeder this past saturday.

I ask the vet if she had treated other Yorkies or small dogs alot, how much experience she had and she admitted not alot ...the smallest she ever had was a 3pound Chihuahua, needless to say Hmmm I am not sure about all of this now. We have NO Vets around where I live that specialize in treating small dogs ...or have seen many in their practice. *major sigh*

I just wanted to let you know that I went through something similar with TJ.

He was 4 months old and 1.8 lbs when I got him. After 1 week he too started to have diarrhea and then it went to globs of mucus and sometimes a drop of blood here and there. His little tummy would make these noises that I swear sounded like a monster at the other end of the house! He didn't want to eat or drink or play, nothing but just sit there with that look like I am so sick mommy. Sometimes he would throw up that yellow bile.

I was constantly at the Vets office. Either his food was bothering his digestive track or he was eating other things from around the house. We did the Flagly (sp?) 3x and it didn't help. Then we went to a limited diet. I chose Duck and Potato, and that was ALL he got.

He got way worse before he got better. TJ would chew and eat all sorts of stuff around the house (poop included). So it was hard to figure out what was causing the problem, b/c this was going on for months.

FINALLY, the Vet did blood work. We found that his Folate level were SKY HIGH. The Vet told me they couldn't be sure unless they did surgery to see inside, but they could venture to guess that means he has an overgrowth of bacteria in his intestines = IBD - Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The Vet said lets try something, it's called Tylan Powder. I was to give TJ a tiny, tiny pinch of this powder everyday mixed in with his food.

Well, this is what finally got his "episodes" to stop. It took months, but now he is FREE and can eat any kind of diet.

Anyway, do a search for IBD or Inflammatory Bowel Disease here on YT and you'll find lots of my threads talking about how sick TJ was.

well thankyou for replying to my post. My Murphy has Bloody diarrhea and Vomiting with these terrible noises comming from his stomach... Like ALIEN is about to pop out through his little tummy. Murphy is 4 months old and 1pound 11 onces. He got alittle dehydrated and was put into the Hospital for the day.

The Vet gave him 2 meds for 7 days plus a speical diet.

Reglan is one medicine and Flagly is the other. The diet consist of Canine A/D and Canine I/D softfoods, he can also have his Royal Canin Dry if he wants.

At first the Vet thought PARVO but did a stool test and it came back negative, I was happy about that yet my baby is still sick.

The vet is thinking its problem with his intestines and bowels ..they are inflamed. What meds was your baby on and whats the diet.

Did it take a long time to get better, and when you said it was worse before getting better....How?

I need suggestions please. Did the vet pick the diet?

Please tell me all about it. My Vet said this is not uncommon in small breeds and Yorkies get it.

I am just hearbroken to see him sick so much

Just try to stay focused, he will be ok. I know it is so hard b/c they are so little and when they are sick it really hurts us.

From the breeder he was on Eukanuba. One week of having TJ (4 months old and 1.8 lbs) he started to have diarrhea, with a little mucus and a little drop of blood here and there. Going into week 3 and for the next approx. 8 months, TJ would have horrible episodes.

After 3 weeks of having him and finding YT for advice, I changed his food to Innova, but the Innova seemed to be too rich - very stinky poops. So that only lasted 1 bag long.

The episodes that TJ would have would be at least every 3 days. When he woke up, I could hear those noises coming from his little body. He would just sit there in his bed. No food and No water, just sitting there sick. I think I started to try boiled chicken and white rice now, he would eat a piece and then 5 minutes later he would poop it out whole :eek: Literally, the food went right through him, it was bizarre. But that only happened a couple of times, b/c for the most part during the episodes he didn't eat.

Anyway, sometimes, only 1 hour would go by (other times 10 hours) and he would poop a normal 1 inch poop and then just pure orange/yellow mucus - globs of it. Once he got this out, he was a new man, he would run to eat and drink and everything was just fine.

Of course I was at the Vet at least 2-3 times a week. They would give him a shot, we did the flagyl (2x) - but nothing really stopped it. The Vet said, he might have a food allergy, he might be eating things from around the house that is upsetting him, or there is an intestinal problem.

Well, TJ was certainly eating things from around the house. #1 poop, which could have been causing the episodes, #2 he would chew on the wood mouldings and the wood doors, pretty much anything he could put in his mouth, he did. I tried to 'puppy' proof as much as I could, but I just couldn't stop the poop eating completely.

So, than we tried a restricted diet from the Vet. I chose IVD - Duck and Potato, and that was the ONLY thing he ate. We went through 2 BIG bags of this food. The episodes didn't really get better, they happened less, but now he was starting to vomit really, really bad too!

I am not thrilled at all with Vet food. I didn't want to feed my dogs anything with corn and def. nothing with By-products. So I stopped the IVD and bought Natural Balance Duck and Potato. But like I said the episodes were not stopping.

So, now the Vet did a blood test. Everything was good, except his folate levels were really really high. They told me he has some form of IBD - an over growth of bacteria some where in his intestines. The Vet said lets try Tylan Powder, it may or may not work. I had to give TJ a very tiny pinch of the Tylan Powder everyday in a small 'meat ball' of wet food so I knew he ate it. Well, what a miracle the Tylan Powder was. Weeks started to just roll by and the episodes got less and less and less.

So, I started to wean TJ off the Tylan. I went to every other day for the next month. Then every 3 days and so on, month by month. I got down to giving it to him every 6 day. By that time, the Vet said that I could stop, b/c the Tylan had worked. TJ was episode free! He could eat anything, no more restricted diet.

The Vet did say though that TJ will always have IBD and he may have to back on the Tylan Powder, but at least we know it works. Tylan Powder is very safe, hardly no long term side effects for dogs, so even if TJ had to be on it his whole life, there's no worries.

Well, sorry this was so long. I have tried to remember everything, but like I said you can do a search here on YT and you'll find my past posts of desperation and my TJ story.

My Murphy is acting alot like your TJ was. He is up playing at the moment.

I boiled white rice and added it to the Prescription Diet I/D ...he ate some of it, but the problem is ...How do I keep him Hydrated? He wont touch the water now and his pee is abit yellow in color.

I tried putting a pinch of brown sugar in the water but its a no go.

He used to drink the water ...I am afraid he will dehydrate on me

Got any ideas ...hints...suggestions...pass them along to me

Well, canned food dog have a lot of water in it, so don't be too alarmed if he isn't drinking as much water when he was eating dry food.

I got baby plain pedialite and I forced him to take it by syringe (a lot of it). Other than that I don't know much to make him drink :confused:
