New Yorkie mommy needs advice on puppy's coughing I'm a brand new Yorkie mommy and my puppy is making a strange coughing sound. It's almost like a panting and he sounds congested. He coughed up some mucus a little while ago. I've only had him for 2 days, and I've never had a dog do this before. I've had dogs before, but always medium to large size, not tiny like my Chewy. I didn't know what I was missing! I've never owned a yorkie, so is it normal or allergies or esophagus (spelling?) problems? I'm going to try and get him in to the vet tomorrow, but I just hoped that maybe someone knew what was happening to him. Thanks so much, Jenni |
it could be kennel cough, where did you get him from? If I were you I'd make an appointment with your vet and they can look him over and prescribe an antibiotic. If you don't take him to be looked at it could develop into something more life threatening. |
Please let us know what the vet. said. I also have only had large dogs, until last year when i got my first yorkie:aimeeyork, now i have 4 babies:aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork ,my oldest is 14 months old, and youngest is 12 weeks old. my husband- who is in Iraq- wants me to get 3 or 4 more. They are so entertaining and loving- my 21 yr. old son is jealous of the money and time i spend with them, it is so funny, but he is taking off work to go to a show with me this weekend, because he does not want me going by myself.:) |
It sounds like Kennel cough.. It can easily be treated if you treat it right away and it doesn't turn into something more serious. My little guy had it for 2 months. Sometimes it can be very stubborn and hangs on.. |
my puppy has kennel cough right now but they said her lungs sound fine and she's not congested. But they put her on Colvomax (or something) its like an amoxcillion and some other type of antibiotic. But her cough hasn't improved yet. Does anyone know if it just takes a while for the medicine to kick in she began taking it on Thursday July 5 |
Good Luck! Please let us know what the vet says....I would def. take her to the vet asap! CHest congestion can really take a toll oh these lil guys! |
Chewy's Vet Visit I called the vet this morning and begged them to get us in (Today is surgery day so they don't usually see patients, but they let us come in anyway. Naturally as I waited for the appointment time to come 'round, Chewy didn't cough much at all and was really playful today. When the vet saw us, he said Chewy was doing great and that it must be allergies. He gave us some cough medicine in case it came back tonight. So, Chewy is doing great tonight and I haven't heard any coughing. He goes back in one week to be re-checked to make sure it hasn't gotten any worse or developed into something serious. Thanks for your help everyone! |

I happened to stumble on this searching for kennel cough posts. When your baby had it for two months, what did you vet do for him? I just got a 4 month old and 5 month old who were supposed to just be fosters (I should know better haha) and now they have a forever home with me. The little girl had kennel cough and is over the infection but still coughs. She had the Clavamox and they took her off that and now she is on Prednisone. It's been about a month now. She's started the weaning off of the steroid now, but this cough just makes me feel so bad for her. I know she feels fine, but she just sounds terrible! lol I didn't know if your vet maybe took some other course of action or just let the cough run it's course. I give her Pedia Care during the day to help sooth her through a bit. I'm trying to see if I can find more of a natural remedy though. I HATE to keep pumping all these drugs through her poor little body. :( |
Its prob kennel cough ... Lola had kennel cough for a month I was worried becuse prob even 2 days before if went away she was still coughing then poof it was gone.. she took clavamox also |
Chewy's going back to the vet tomorrow for his re-check. The coughing has changed but is not totally gone yet. Instead of a long dragged out repetitive cough with a gag/spit up at the end, it is short but sounds a LOT more labored, kinda like an old man with emphysema. I actually only heard him do it twice today, and he is still VERY active and playful and eating well. (Bottomless Pit if I would let him!) |
