7-month yorkie limping About yesterday morning, my 7-month old pup started limping. It was very unexpected and I really can't predict what caused it other than the fact that he was very hyper and running around the place in the morning (as usual the second we let him out of the crate). Anyway, his condition yesterday was: -did not do much walking, just layed in bed all day -appetite seemed normal Today's condition: -appetite seemed quite normal -tries to play with me but can't due to limping -walks around the house more often -still limping --> condition doesn't seem to have changed I'm quite worried about my dog and have done some research about luxating patella but it seems like he is too young to have this. I am not sure if I should take him to the vet and if I do, I would like to know what I should expect. I'm also concerned about costs. It seems that any conditions involving weak knees will most likely lead to costly medical treatments. Does anyone have any tips/recommendations on how I should approach this? I am looking through pet insurance plans but they are so confusing and pricey. Thanks again for your help |
Ana was recently in to see the vet for an annual exam and I was told that she already has luxating patellas in both back legs! The vet said that as long as it doesn't seem to bother her and she isn't constantly limping, then it should be okay. The whole situation shocked me because Ana is only 4 months old. I do know that it is a common problem in small breed dogs and if it gets increasingly worse then it will require surgery. Hopefully it doesn't come to that! On the pet insurance issue, I have full coverage for my yorkie under VPI pet insurance, however, the company will not cover genetic defects (such as luxating patella). If anyone knows of any insurance companies that will cover it, please let me know! |
He's the perfect age for Legge-perthes disease to show up. Keep an eye on him, check his leg for muscle deterioration. If his limp doesn't improve and you notice that he keeps the foot hovering over the floor instead of putting weight on it get him to the vet for xrays. He may have just irritated it but it pays to be causious. The good news is if it's Legge-perthes, the surgery is cheaper and the recovery very successful. My little Cricket had the surgery in Feb and you would never know that she's had it. You have to really examine it to see that that leg is slightly shorter than the other one. It doesn't pain her at all and there is no risk of arthritis developing since there is no bone contact at the joint. Hope this helps. I hope he is better soon. |
If he's still limping tomorrow, I would get him checked out. LP, depending on the degree, can show up at birth. Also a trained person or better yet, a vet can feel it at a very young age. Hopes he's better soon. |
it has just hit me that 2 days ago, my pupy received his rabie shots on his right thigh (the leg that's limping right now), is this just a coincidence or could this have anything to do with him limping??? |
A shot in the thigh? I've never had a vet do that... It's always in the scruff of the neck... That can be the problem. Is it the same leg? |
I was thinking the same thing but I figured just because my vet shoots them in the neck doesnt mean everyones does. If they gave him a shot in the leg maybe they injured something. It is worth looking into. |
I know when I get a shot directly into my muscle it hurts like heck for a day or two. It can't be any different for a little puppy. Plus, getting shots seems to make my girls groggy on top of that so that will explain all the sleeping the day before. |
yes i am 100% sure it was the same leg. I just did some research, with the limited info that i have found, it seems a rabies shot can cause limping either because the leg gets sore or a reaction to the drug. Anyone have anymore info on this???? Thanks |
Hi, my little girl just got her rabbies shot the other day and it was also given in the leg. She wouldn't use the leg for an entire day. If she had to put it down, she also limped. I'm no expert on this stuff but I'd assume the shot is causing the limp. I hope your baby is ok and nothing serious is going on. :) |
just now i have try to lightly squeezed the muscle on this uppper thigh, he is definitely reacting to it and more than when i try to bend or flex his leg. It makes me think he is just sore, but at the same time how can he be so sore after two days. What do you guys think? |
Well, it sounds like it could be the shot. But I'd keep a very close watch on it for a day or two. If it doesn't get any better I would suggest taking him in for a checkup. My little girl was limping and it ended up being Legge Perthes disease. I hope that isn't the case here. He may also have just pulled something or bruised his leg somehow jumping around. My Abbie has leggs perthes she also had the surgery in December and uses the effected hip like there was nothing wrong with it! It could be the shot as well in either case i would have it checked out. Good Luck |
Thanks for your comments! I called the vet today and they said that it's quite common for yorkies/dogs in general to have a reaction from the shots. If she is still limping, then I will have to bring her in the next few days. |
