Rabies shot My Reggie had his annual rabies vaccination yesterday. Early tonight he started feeling bad, I can't pick him up without him yelping, he's just lying around. I can tell he's not himself. I called an emergency vet and she said it was normal. Has anyone else experienced this when your baby had their shots? |
Most definitely. My baby is always a little under the weather and tender where he is given his shot. It should pass soon, but you were a good mom to go on your instinct and call to be sure. Sometimes a vet will recommend baby tylenol or benadryl. I hope he feels better soon. |
Thanks for the reply, I hate to see him in pain and not acting like himself. This will be his last rabies shot, again thanks for letting me know your baby has this reaction too. |
Poor baby! I hope he's feeling better today. |
Hi, all of my babies have always felt crappy a few days after the rabbies vac. :( Hope your baby feels better soon. |
Layla reacts HORRIBLE to her rabies shot.. she is very tired, lethargic, sleeps for about 2 days... has a fever... just make sure he gets LOTS of fluids.. poor guy.... hang in there! |

Yup - the injection site is always tender and they tend to sleep a lot for a day or so. Hope you baby is feeling better. |
I hope no one reports me to the Indiana authorities for this, but my dogs haven't had their shots this year. They are ages 2 and 3. Otis is liver compromised so there's no question of him not getting them, but I do not want to chance anything with Oliver. They are never in the yard unsupervised and Oliver received his shot last year. I've heard they can last up to 3 years and a lot of vets do not immunize yearly. I'm still on the fence, but at this point, I'm leaning more toward every 3 years for Oliver. Otis, no shots, ever again, because of his liver. |

We started giving Minnie benedryl when she gets boosters now & that helps a lot! In fact, she's scheduled for her rabies shot tomorrow, then she's done for a year. Thank Goodness! :D |
Winston recently had his rabies shot...he didn't act any different, but he had a lump at the injection site for quite a few days, is this normal too? |

On one hand... I don't want to take any chances with my babies NOT getting their shots... but on the other hand, some are now saying not only are the yearly shots unnecessary, but they can actually CAUSE harm. I'm with you though... there's no way I would chance it with Otis, ever. |
I have a 7 1/2 month old female and when ever she got her shots I could not touch her without her crying. My vet told me to give her 1/2 a baby asprin and put a warm compress on the injection site. That seems to have helped her alot. |
Thanks everyone for your concern and advice. Reggie if feeling a little better but still not himself. I'll be so happy when he gets back to normal. |
