Need advice; anybody going through the same thing? Hello, I got Baby who is now almost 13weeks and 2 pounds and she had a cough from day one. I have been in and out of the vet's office. I had blood work done and the vet said all her white blood cells are elevated by 10 points higher than normal. She has been on antiobiotic since the 15th of June. Her coughing sounds so much better but she still coughs, especially early in the morning as she is sleeping (around 6AM it alwasy wakes me up). I took her to the vet again today and they did X-ray on her. It appears as though she has pneumonia the vet said. Now they want to do astma breathing on her, another $30/day procedure. We decided to keep her on antibiotic to see if she will get better, if not I guess we have to try the astma breathing. It just feels as though there are no straight answers from the vet, more office visit fees, and I am worried about my little Baby girl not getting 100% better. She has a great appetite and plays and bites on my 11 pound Pomeranian; it's just the coughing that is off. Anybody has advice on how serious pneumonia is and what I should do at this point???? :( |

What is coupaging? I'm kinda new to being a dog owner. My other dog is only 6 months. So you suggest I do the "humidifier" (=asthma breather thing?) right now or should I wait a few more days to see how the AB continues going? What's weird is that the coughing is mostly intese early in the morning. |
Omg! This is the same EXACT story I'm having with my little one too. I have a 7month old yorkie.. had pneumonia since she was like 3 months old.. but it took 3 different vets to figure it out.. she was constantly coughing.. Zoie has been on meds for 4 straight months.. office visit after office visit... x-ray after x-ray.. and yet, she is still sick and still has the virus. Zoie acts normal and happy, and has great apetite and plays like everything is ok.. Zoie's vet bills have been outrageous to say the least. One of the biggest problems with Zoie is that the vet didn't know their head from their ass, and she's been getting immune to all the medicine shes been on since sh'e sbeen on them for 4 months now!! Zoie is still not better, and she's getting weaker, and nothing is helping her. :( I wish you the best of luck. Make sure you know what you are getting into and don't let the vet bully you into anything you are not prepared for.. Pneumonia is no little disease. :( Keep us updated on your little yorkie's progress |
ask your vet for Hycodan for the dog, it is a cough suppressant and will relieve any pain the pup is having from the intense coughing .... good luck ... keep us posted ... |

My vet advised me to steam him 3 times a day for 20-30 minutes and then I coupage him 5 minutes on each side to help move any mucous in his lungs or Bonchi (sp?) In addition she had me go to the pharmacy and we pulled out the big guns and put him in zithromax. It has to be made special because this is a human drug and needs to be made for his body size. To counter act all the antibiotic going through his little baby body I add acidophilus, which can also be bought at the drug store, which I add to his food to create good bacteria in his body. It helps him to counteract the negative effect of the antibiotic. He is doing better. The steam and coupage is making a difference and feel that the antibiotic alone would not be enough. Question: What does the cough sound like? If you need to talk, please feel free to PM me. I know how hard this is for you and your little one. Please stay strong and let's just make sure he gets everything he needs to get well. Take care. |
Oh my God, really? :-( That really worries me now. She was allready sick when I got her. I've taken her to the vet several times too, had blood work done and finally Xray which showed that it appears to be pneumonia. The vet suggested brining her in for "breathing treatment" for 5 days but I just can't afford all these tests and there is no guarantee. So, the people I got her from are giving her the treatments at home since last night and I hope it works. It sucks because even though I've only had her for 3 weeks I have gotten attached to her and her personality so it is hard to just have the peopel trade her in and get me another puppy but at the same time I'm scared that the pneumonia won't go away and I will end up with more vet bills. I don't know what to do!!! :-( If your dog has had it for that long it really makes me wonder. Just like yours she is usually playful and eats food and snacks. Hmm..... What did the vets tell you is needed for your dog to get 100% well? Is pneumonia really serious and dangerous? It's not contagious though right? ( I do have another dog) |

Thank you for the advice! I am new to having dogs. Strangest thing is that I used to be terrified of dogs and now I have two that I love to death! I am not sure about a few things you mentioned. I can't figure out what "coupage" is and what do you mean with "steaming" the dog? I wonder if that's the same as breathing treatment? Is Bronchial Pneumonia the same as regular Pneumonia (sorry, I know I might sound a little dumb but I really don't know) or is it different and how serious is it? How long have you been treating your dog to get well and is he getting better? I don't want to take her back because I am allready after 3 weeks so attached to her and her personality and fear that they might eventually put her to sleep if it doesn't go away and I bring her back to them, but at the same time I can't afford a bunch of vet bills. It's horrible that people sell dogs that are allready sick. Now I'm in a bad situation and my heart and my mind are not agreeing with what I should do.... |

The major problem that made Zoie go down hill so fast was that she wasn't getting enough oxygen. Oxygen level should be at 99-100... 90% is bad.. Zoie was at 81-82%... When you hit mid 70's... that means they are knocking on deaths door basically.. so thats why she stayed in the hospital for 3 days, they had to get her to breath in enough oxygen. I didn't realize how bad pneumonia is.. but it's even worse on puppies. |
