Reddish-Brown stains on eyes I asked my Vet about the stains the discharge from Ryoko's eyes were leaving and if there was anything i could do to prevent it. he gave me an ophthalmic triple antibiotic and to treat it, and toild me that sometimes if things like hair gets in their eyes it can cause an infection and that this med would work, has anyone else used this before and did it work? |
Just to be clear i am talking about the tear stains that leave a stain on the hair not exactly on the eyes lol |
I've never had to use any meds for Jake, but he did tear alot when he was teething. My vet told me to give him distilled water to drink. I've been giving it to him for awhile now, and he never tears. |
I have a white shih tzu.... and if she eats food with beet pulp in it, her tears will stain her hair......... if the dog food looks redish brown..... then that could be the cause. |
I second the distilled water and I also use Angels Eyes on their food. What kind of food do you feed? If there is beet powder in it, this can cause the red stains, too. |
He eats Eukanuba. I been reading about changing the water as well. I do hope the grocery store around the corner has distilled water... the food looks brown with no read in it..... hmmmm Also i know PR water is way worse than in the US when it comes to chemicals to clean it. Well i been using the med since Monday and i have seen a change but I think i will change the water as well because that may have been a huge factor. Thanks for the replies.. |
There can be a lot of factors that cause tear stains. First of all, it can be genetic. Some dogs are genetically prone to tearing more than others. Your vet gave you an antibiotic because when the hair is contantly wet, bacteria can buildup there turning the hair a reddish-brown color. So the antibiotic can help get rid of the bacteria growing there. You also want to feed a food with no dyes in it as the dyes can come out in the tears and saliva and cause stains. Most of your premium foods don't have dyes in them. Minerals in tap water can also cause stains so if you have a dog that really has a problem with staining, you might want to try distilled water. Finally, there are two products that really help control the stains. Angel Eyes is a product you sprinkle on their food and that works from the inside out to prevent stains. Eye Envy cleans the hair on the surface. |
i use distilled water and eye envy and it works as i have a maltese and she has no staining - also i keep her hair around her eyes short |
Chewy has bad tear stain also. The vet told me there is nothing I can do!!! Will the distilled water mess his system up? He gets loose bowls so easily!!! He is on royal caynin sp? Would that hurt his eyes??? I will try all your tips here...Thanks for the info! |
