Help! 11 week puppy - round worm - Sunday I have had my puppy for a week. I do not think the breeder wormed her as her health record shows nothing about it. She just had a round worm come out in her stool. The vet is not open today. Is there anything I can give her now? What should I do! I am so worried. She is 1 pound 13 ounces. |
I would advise you to call the vet in the morning. Please do not give her anything over the counter. Are you sure it is a round worm, and not a segment from a tapeworm? If you can see the worm, place the poop in a plastic bag and show it to the vet. Round worms look like spaghetti, tapeworm is about the size of a piece of cooked rice but "puffed" up. Good luck and with the right medicine, they will be gone. Your pup should have been wormed. However, if they ingest a flea, they get a tapeworm. Worms and fleas are part of their ongoing life unfortunately. I don't like either, ugh! Google canine worms and you will see pictures of various worms. |
I know it is a roundworm because I googled the images of all the worms before I posted. I am so upset. She has been healthy all week. She looks good and acts fine, I am just worried about her. |
Good research and don't worry, she is okay but a dose of Pancur from the vet will get rid of the nasty worms. Usually it is given for five days in a syringe which is filled with the liquid. I learned though that you will need to press the plunger slowly or they will gag. Icky isn't it? |
PS Worms do upset their stomach, so she may have a loose poopy with mucus and even a bit of blood. |
Thank you! Is there anything I should do to disinfect the house. I never let her urine or poop stay longer than an hour in her area. She has a bed and a bear she sleeps with in her crate at night. She also has all kinds of little stuffed toys she plays with. |
No, you are fine and so are her things. The first time you find worms or fleas is so upsetting. I would wash her bedding after she is dosed with the medication though. Be careful with bleach or toxic disinfectants that she will lay down on, walk on, etc. Remember they lick their paws. |
Thank you so much! |
You are most welcome, and the internet plus YT is an excellent source of information. Warmly, Deborah Looking forward to hearing how everything progressed. |
