Yorkie Puppy/9wks old, in hospital with Upper Respiratory Infection I bought Riley from a breeder when he was 6.5 weeks old and now he's a little over 9 weeks. About 3 days after I got him, he showed signs of a runny nose but not much lethargy. I took him to a vet who said he might have a slight cold but did not want to give him anti-biotics. They also diagnosed him with chryptorchid. So I took Riley home and 3 days later I noticed that he was eating and drinking less and the runny nose turned a bit "snotty". He had a greener discharge and it was crusting up all over his fur. He didnt want to play anymore and would just sleep all day so I decided to take him to another vet for a 2nd opinion. The 2nd vet said that baby Riley was coming down with an upper respiratory infection and put him on a small dose of Clavamox. He sent him home with me and I kept a close eye on him all day. Later the next night I noticed Riley had completely stopped eating and started vomiting. I rushed him to the nearest Pet ER where they took him immediately off the antibiotics and gave him a SubQ shot/fluids. After this Riley got better for almost a week. He was running around, playing and eating his dry dog food. He wasn't on any meds though, and his nose was still very congested. He was also still having some trouble breathing. I thought we were getting better, but then on Saturday night he developed gagging which would happen every 30 seconds or so. I thought to be safe I would take him to the ER vet once again. The other ER vet (at the same clinic) said that he absolutely had to go on anitbiotics and gave him Albon. She sent him home with me telling me that everything would be ok. On Sunday morning I gave him his first dose along with a little food and turkey meat. I had to leave for a few hours so I left him sleeping in his little bed. 3 hours later I came home to find an extremely lethargic puppy. He wouldn't eat, drink, or even sit up. at 5pm on Sunday I noticed his eyes were almost bugging out of his head and he was completely listless. Once again, I took him to the ER vet who admitted him to the hospital for IV fluids (catheder had to go in the jugular), a sugar drip, and new antibiotics. They kept him all last night and said his blood sugar was so low, he almost had gone into a coma or had seizures. It would not even register on the scale. In the middle of the night they got it up to 50. I was up all night worried sick about him. They are telling me he may have a congenital defect of the liver (ie shunt) or it could be something else because of the vomiting, but I am convinced that he always gets worse on the antibiotics. He's at his regular vets today, still receiving treatment and his blood sugar is back up to 202. I think he just has a horrible upper respiratory infection and has a bad reaction to antibiotics which makes him sick to his stomach and makes him vomit. Hence he can't get better, and his blood sugar goes down. They're saying prognosis is 70/30 but i'm still deathly worried about the little guy. I've only had him for 3 weeks and already i'm totally in love with him. If anyone can give me advice, or if they've been in a similar situation, please let me know. It seems all 6 vets have different advice/diagnosis. Also, does it seem like I have a right to go back to the breeder and request some kind of refund or money? I've paid $1000.00 in vet bills in the last 2.5 weeks and he got sick only days after I purchased him. I dont like conflict, but I'm bleeding money here and I only want my little one to get better. Thanks guys Melissa |
Good I am glad you took the advice to bring it here. I hope that someone can give you more info. I will keep you and your lil one in my prayers. |

Do you really think he was too young to be adopted? He seemed healthy at the time and she gave me 72 hours to get him to a vet. If there were no serious issues at the time, then there are no refunds. I have a year health guarantee for replacement -- meaning if he dies, I can get a new one...but I don't want a new one. I just want Riley to get better. :( I attached his picture as my avatar. Thanks all for your well-wishes. |

Yes Yorkies should not go to there forever homes till atleast 10 weeks. If the breeder let him go earlier I would say they were insane. I really do hope he comes out of it ok . I also think you need to try at least let them know what is going on |
I was a bit shocked when I went to pick him up and the breeder had 10 other kinds of puppies (from her Ranch in East Texas, she said)...I was thinking with that many puppies -- about 30 total -- that she probably is into turning them over versus selling a healthy puppy that she has to care for longer. Shes a nice little old lady, but I think I need to evaluate my options. I will give her a call. |

Has anyone else had a problem with their little yorkies (under 2 lbs) and them not being able to handle antibiotics? is there one that has worked for you guys? Thanks for your help daisy mae |
Have you given him any nutrical?? Albon, I think that's for Coccidia? He should have never left his mommy so young and I would be on the phone with this breeder raising some cain! This breeder had no right selling this puppy so young, he should have least been 10 weeks old before he left his mommy! Please call the breeder back and see if she will let him come back and nurse on the mommy. Not sure if he will since he has been off her for this long. I would also get a second opinion from another vet asap. Definitely go out and get him some puppy nutrical asap!!! Please keep me updated! |

Hi there. Welcome to YT :) So sorry that your little one is not feeling very well. I don't know how to answer your questions, b/c I just don't know. My Roxy who is 2.5 years old and weighs 5lbs didn't do so well with Clavamox. She was to be on it for 10 days b/c of a mild staph infection. By days 8, she had pure mucus poop, then followed by direaha and mucus. I still continued the meds for the next 2 days, but I later found out from the Vet that I should have stopped it ASAP. Roxy had mucus poop for 2 weeks after that! All I can say is that do you feel comfortable with your Vet? If so then follow his lead, if not, then we need to find you another Vet asap. We are here for you, so if you need help, we will try to help you. About the breeder. I would def. call and tell her that your pup is extremley sick and tell her how much money you have spent and go from there  |

Yeah, i have given him nutrical (he doesnt like it), but hes in the vet's care right now on the IV. He's getting a dextrose drip and he's been doing ok this afternoon. He's too sick to transport him to his mamas...the vet is doing all they can do for him right now. They switched him from Albon to Ceta drops, and he seems to be keeping his food down. They also have him on prescription science diet wet food and the vet said he's eating it. They may let him go home with me tonight, but they have to take the catheder out of his neck :( Also my recent vet has been pretty good, he has had to go through all the paperwork from the ER vets...He was voted best vet in Dallas by D magazine, so im hoping there's some validity to that. Also he saved my best friends' pup who was very, very sick. |

I think you should call the Breeder(who I am guessing is a Mill or Broker)and let them know that you will be turning them in for selling the pup to young and selling a sick pup if they don't give your money back for vet bills. then do turn them in after you get the money! |
Hi Rylie's mom. I'm so sorry about your little guy. I cannot help you with what may be wrong with him but I can give you some suggestions regarding $$ from the breeder. Let me first say that where you got him sounds more like a small scale puppymill. 30 different pups is a lot of pups for a reputable breeder to have. The second clue is 9 weeks. Most and I say most reputable breeders will not let their pups go that young. Some will but most of them won't. General rule is 12 weeks or at best 10 weeks or so. The first thing I would do is contact someone in your area "Better Business Beaur" is the best I can think of and ask them about Puppy Lemon Laws in your state. I live in NJ and I know in NJ the breeder, petstore etc. has to refund you vet bills up to the price of your dog. They cannot force you to return him back for a refund although some will try to. I would contact the breeder right away and let them know he is sick. The other thing is since he came from a place with a large amount of dogs have they checked him for parvo? In so far as Liver Shunt a simple bile acid test will rule that out or confirm that. I really hope your little guy pulls through and I'm sorry for you and for him. Best of luck. Elaine |
Hi, Iam so sorry your baby is sick, sending you both prayers, hope you can get things settled, and he gets well soon, i know you love him alot:) ive only had molly one week and i already love her. |
