Sick after neutering Sparky got neutered Friday morning. I brought him home that afternoon and he whimpered around, but Saturday evening he had diarrhea and started throwing up. He's still got diarrhea, but he's not throwing up. I've been giving him small amounts of chicken and rice (he doesn't have too much appetite, but he will eat little bits). He's playing and acting happy, not in pain. I never gave him the pain meds (Rimadyl) that the vet gave me, cause I read all the bad stuff about it (plus he didn't act like he really needed it). Could this be coming from the stress of the surgery? Or maybe just a reaction to the drugs they used during the surgery? |
Poor little Sparky. Just saw your post, and am hoping he is feeling better now! Toto didn't have any problems when she was spayed so I don't know why Sparky would have been acting this way. I would guess that perhaps it was just the stress and medications. If he still isn't feeling well, I would definitely call the vet. Hope he will be back to his old perky self soon!! ;) |
Thumper acted the same when he was neutered. He had diarrhea for two days.Yes I think it was the stress and the Anesthesia, plus the IV. He had no pain meds. He was fine after three days . |
How is little Sparky this morning? Kalani didn't have any problems with diarrhea after his neuter but I looked on the post-op paperwork they gave me and that is definitely one of the possible side-effects of the anesthesia. Hope he is much better today:) |
Sparky didn't have any diarrhea last night but he had one this morning. It had a little bit of consistency to it, but it was still loose. I think I'm going to call the vet when they open just to make them aware of it. (They all know I am a worry wart........so I don't want to ruin my reputation.):) All I gave him yesterday was chicken and rice and he just picks at it but last night before he came to bed he ate a few bites of his Merricks kibbles. So I don't know if his appetite is gone or he's just tired of the chicken and rice (although he'll eat all the chicken I sit and feed him). I kind of thought it may be stress cause everytime he's gotten his shots he would throw up alot and then the next day have a few loose bm's. I just hate to see him not his usual bouncy energetic self. |
glad to hear Sparky is feeling a lot better now...i know i would be worried also... |
Poor baby. Hope he's felling better soon. |
Could well be the anesthesia. Ozzie doesn't always do well with it and neither do I. hope the baby is better today. :) |
Just got back from the vet. They did a stool sample to check for bacteria overgrowth, checked his temperature and listened to his lungs, stomach and heart. They said the stool sample showed he had an overgrowth of some kind of bacteria that we normally have in our stools. They said an overgrowth of it would trigger the vomiting and diarrhea. She said it could have been triggered by stress of possibly eating something he wasn't supposed to. But more than likely it was the stress since he's an inside dog and I cook for him. She put him on an antibiotic for 6 days and said he should progressively get better daily. I sure hope so. I hate to see him sick and not feeling up to par. He's such a big baby anyway and just soaks up the loving. Of course I don't mind at all.......that's the reason I got him was to spoil him and baby him. Please keep him in your prayers for me though, I want him better........YESTERDAY, if you know what I mean! It won't happen soon enough. |
