diarrhea? I brought Molly home last night. She's 9 weeks old today and weighs 1 1/2 lbs. She did not poop at all last night, but has had diarrhea all day today. Is there anything I can give her? This is very frustrating. I'm sure she's thinks of me as the big person yelling "Noooooooooooooooooo!" right now, and I hate that!! The breeder had switched their food earlier this week 'cos of loose stool. She switched them to Eukanuba and sent some home with us. Could it be just the change in environment? Or that combined with the new food? I'm trying to watch her closely and take her outside often. She has pooped and peed outside, and I've done the good potty dance. She's not very interested in treats right now, so I've just been using praise. She'll start to squat, and I run get her and take her outside. Then she's more interested in smelling that going potty. Any suggestions will be appreciated!! Carla |
Hi congratulations on your baby. Is Molly still eating and drinking? If she is she should be ok until you can get her to the vet. It could be the stress and or the change in diet. Mnay puppies get coccidia which is a parasite and can be easily treated with medicine from ther vet. But when they are so little they need to be seen as soon as possible by the vet. If you have any nutrical on hand you can try that to keep her sugar level up. Keep us posted. |
Yes, she's eating. She ate her food real well for supper. She just wasn't interested in any treat I had as a "good potty" reward. I did notice something milky white in her last round of poop that I cleaned up. It was about 1/4 in long. Kind of looked like a worm, but was not moving. Thanks for your reply! Carla |
Aww poor baby. Do you have any plain pedialyte? Did the breeder give you or tell you to get Nutrical? She's so young and so little that it's really important that you don't let her get dehydrated. I'm no expert, but I don't think I'd worry about doing the "outside" thing today. It's a big change for her to leave her littermates & Mom and any change in their routine can have an affect on their bm's. Did you happen to get any pee pads? I don't know - I hope one of the breeders will answer because I'd be very concerned about this. I hope it's not what I think it is. If you don't get any responses soon (it's Friday night :) try doing a search for "diarrhea". Please let us know how she's doing and if she starts to get weak "please" call the vet ASAP. Good Luck! |
She is eating and drinking well, and peeing, so I wasn't thinking about being dehydrated. I know with my little boy they told me to watch the eyes and mouth getting dry for signs of dehydration. Think it's the same with dogs? I've been watching that, and also for how much she's drinking and peeing. I'll continue to watch that. Carla |
Oh good! That is a good sign. There are so many things this could be - I'd just watch for any weakness tonight, then call the vet in the morning. How old is your boy? Congratulations on your baby girl! And "Welcome to YorkieTalk"!!! |
I just read a post where a vet suggested that a woman cook rice for her dog w/ diarrhea. I will try that in the morning. My son is 10. I haven't used this many wipies in one day in a long time!!! She is in her crate now. She has not peed or pooped in her crate at all, which is good. She was in it all night last night, and off and on today when we both needed a break. I've probably just jinxed myself!! This is just very frustrating, but posting has helped. My husband has taken some of the potty breaks this evening, so that's helped too!! Now I'm going to try and get some sleep, and we'll try again in the morning. I'll try to log back in tomorrow and check. Any more advice will be GREATLY appreciated!! I will also be calling the breeder back tomorrow. She has asked me to call her back if it doesn't get any better. Carla |
We went to the vet... He said she has something that's similar to E coli. He said she could've had it for a while, then the stress of moving brought on the symptoms. She got a shot of Baytril (possibly other things mixed in?). She was not happy about the fecal matter test , and REALLY did not like the shot. He also gave us some Biosol to give her for 10 days. He was looking for coccidia (sp?), but did not see it. He told us that if she still had diarrhea on Monday to bring in a stool sample and he would check it again. I was up at 5 this morning fixing chicken and rice, and she was wolfing it down. The vet suggested I keep feeding her that, along with some carrots and peas mixed in. She had a better bowel movement right after she ate some lunch, so hopefully she's on the mend. And I found a new vet that I like!! Carla |
I am Glad to hear that the rice is helping her our with diarrhea. I just got back from the Vet Today with Lexi (nursing mom). She has beeen having Diarrhea off & on for days. She has a antibotic to take for a week. Vet said she must have a Bacteria Infection from cleaning the pups bottoms. He also suggested mixing plain white rice with her kibble. Stormy my 10 wk old went to the Vet yesterday with TapeWorms in her Diarrhea. Vet gave her a pill to get rid of them. Just 1 week ago I had Scruffy in the Hospital with Pancreas/Liver Infection. Hope your Furbaby is doing Better:getwell: :ghug: |
It's been a great workout... Bend over, wipe, spray, wipe, stand up. Repeat 50 times, then mop. Whew!! She is some better. She did not poop in her crate last night, and didn't bark either. Or I may have just been so tired from the puppy diarrhea workout that I didn't hear her...ha! We did find a worm in her poop late Saturday night, so we wormed her Sunday. She's on the antibiotic for at least a week. I hope she is on the upswing!! At least Sunday afternoon was much better than Friday and Saturday. My husband's being a trooper. He did not really want an inside dog, but did it for me. And he's really trying to have a good attitude about it. I really appreciate it! I hope your babies are doing better as well. Those vet bills add up, don't they??? Thanks again to everyone's suggestions!!! That really helps!!! :D Carla |
VEt Bills - I am almost up to $400 with these 3 being sick in 1 1/2 weeks time. They hardly ever get sick - just happened to be all sick at the same time) I told the receptionist to just keep my Checkbook till I go back in Tuesday. (the 3 wk old pups need the stitches taken out of tails & there 1st worming) Hows your Furbaby today. |
doing better! She's doing better. She still has worms, though. We treated her with Nemex 2 on Sunday. I wonder when we can treat her again? Hopefully my husband knows. I have finally gotten it thru my head that I have to be right with her if she's not in her crate unless I want to be cleaning up spots!! Potty time outside has turned into playtime now, so I think she will have to be on a leash until she potties. Her reward will then be playing off the leash. Maybe that will help!! And the woman I bought her from has offered to pay for 1/2 the vet bills. Since we can't be for sure where she caught whatever she had, I thought that was nice of her. I hope your's are doing better soon!! Carla |
