Rocky's eye not closing - facial paralysis Hi, again. After a battery of tests and no diagnosis, it appears my Rocky has facial paralysis of unknown origin. I will bring him back to the vet at the end of May so he can check him out again. His eyelid still doesn't close but he appears to sleep, he is active and his usual crazy self. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? All I can think is that it must be due to some sort of injury. None of the medical tests so far show anything abnormal. |
Poor baby. Did you see a neurologist? I hope it goes away soon. |

Did they check his thyroid? Hypothyroidism can cause facial paralysis. If he were younger or you could remember an accident where he was hurt, then I would look towards injury as a possible cause; however, seeing that he is 10 yrs old with no known injury, I would say that this is more likely to be idiopathic facial paralysis which can be common in older dogs. Idiopathic means there is no known cause. The condition may be permanent or it may correct itself or it may come and go. The extent of the paralysis could also get better and get worse at times. Regardless, it will not affect his quality of life in any way and he will be just as happy as always. There is no treatment for the condition but your vet should give you some eyedrops to keep his eye from drying out. Rocky's eye not closing Hi, thanks to all of you. I have done some reading on this online and seen some similar information. His thyroid is fine - so are his ears. He doesn't have lyme disease. I read that 75% of these cases have no known cause. I also read about the eye drops. I'm surprised my vet has not recommended that yet. I will call tomorrow and mention it and see what he says. So far his quality of life does not seem to be effected in any way, although for the life of me, I don't see how he sleeps. He is so active, always jumping, pulling, etc. and he is still the same. He did have a hard fall off the bed once but I don't know if that did it. He has also gotten under my feet. I feel terrible but as I said, he seems fine with this. To look at him you wouldn't know there was anything wrong. It may be something he has to live with. It gives me some hope to think it may resolve itself. I know that sometimes nerves heal after a long period of time. Thanks again for the information and for all your responses. Erika |
