Cause of Mac's Death On Apr. 18, I posted about the death of my precious 9 year old Mac. Final pathology reports have confirmed he died of protein losing enteropathy most likely caused by intestinal lymphangiectasia. If dogs are asymptomatic (as Mac was ) the only way to detect this is through blood tests. My vet said they start these routinely when the dog is seven. Mac always had his teeth cleaning and physical in May. I assume this condidtion started after May of 2006. If I get another Yorkie I will insist he be tested at least twice a year for albumen levels. You can check the site below for further info. I am looking to adopt another Yorkie. I am working with YorkiesInc. Does anyone have any other recommendations for reliable adoption sites? I live in CT. I wish all the best to those who have sick doggies. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/inte...giectasia.html |

I remember your post too, I am glad you at least found an answer, it is so hard not knowing...I know that I have learned from this and I'm sure many others will also. I mourn the loss of your baby, and it sounds to me that you will eventually find a new baby to love. Good luck in your search!!! |
I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of Mac. I wish you the best of luck in adopting a new baby. |
Sallyvine...I have been in your shoes. We fought this disease (along wth a couple other health issues) with our first Yorkie for the last 3 or 4 years of his life. I remember way too much about that time and even though he's been gone for almost 3 years I can hardly talk about him without tearing up. We put him to rest when he let us know he had had enough...he was 2 months shy of turning 13 and when he felt good he was still like a puppy. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy and hugs... Teri |
thanks for the info!!! what age should you start getting this tested?? good luck on your puppy search, im sure you will find the perfect pup for you! |

Yes, all geriatric animals should have specialized panels done to test protein levels. Expensive but worth it, however, if I had the opportunity to go back even one year, I would have taken her to an internist as my second opinion vet suggested. Thanks for sharing and again I am so sorry for your loss. Warmly, Deborah |
I remember reading your original post also. Again I am so sorry for your loss of Mac. You might try www.Petfinder.com and www.Yorkierescueme. Good luck, I hope you find your new baby soon. |
So sorry for you loss. |
Sallyvine, something that I have been thinking about since reading your thread is that Sophie and Mac are not in pain anymore. I kept her alive too long because I didn't want to not have her in my present life. However, when I remember her beautiful eyes looking at me, so very sick, I am so glad she isn't living with that terrible disease which caused her so much pain. I bet Mac was a little fighter like Sophie. She would rally, then I would have hope but in the end, she was just worn out. All of her energy was exhausted. Bless little Mac and Sophie. Warmly, Deborah PS You think you have moved to a deeper acceptance, and then reading your note returns me to that sad day. It takes time and allow the tears to fall once again for our beloved friends. |
I would say to start no later than 7. Talk to your vet and tell him about Mac. Give my love to Bella. Sallyv |
