Maddie is Hurt! When I came home from work today, my boyfriend told me that Maddie had hurt her leg. He was throwing the ball for her in the grass and suddenly she started picking up her left front leg. I picked her up and checked her over and quickly saw that her dew claw, which normally is close to her arm, was perpendicular to her arm! It seems to be hurting her, because she is limping on that leg a little. She also is licking at her dew claw. I know I'm going to bring her to the vet for this. But I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen? Maddie is almost 16 months now so is it too late to have her dew claws removed? |
aww sorry maddie got hurt while playing. If her dew claw does need to be removed she should have a fast recovery. its such a small thing and can be snipped off easily with only one or two stitches put in (or surgical glue if she's really small). i hope that is all that is wrong and she didn't sprain or pull anything else. good luck at the vet |
I wanted to have Jo's removed but I was told that the older they get the harder the surgery is on them. When they're puppies they can be easily removed but as they grow it's almost like a bone connection and it's more serious to have them removed. Talk with your vet and see what they think. I hope Maddie is o.k. |
poor maddie! hope all goes well at the vet and that everything is oky :( kikko and i send lots of hugs and kisses |
Aww poor Maddie I sure hope all is ok. I am surprised she has any dew claws. But Let us know how she is doing . |
Thank you for your replies. I'm definately going to bring her to the vet. Right now all she wants me to do is hold her. Most days she only wants to play ball so this is unusual. She must really be hurting. :cry8: |

Poor baby. They usually don't remove dew claws in dogs that are not very young puppies unless there is a problem. Obviously your dog now has a problem with it. If it has to be removed she's recovery just fine. I hope she's feeling better soon. |

It would put your dog through unnecessary pain and stress. |
Maddie Actually, I had one of my Yorkies dewclaws removed a little while after I got her as I didn't want her to snag them on anything. It wasn't a big deal and she recovered quickly. I don't like dewclaws because of this very reason. I hope Maddie recovers quickly. Angel |
My first Yorkie ,37 years ago, Karma, injured his dew claw and it bled some but it healed up. |
Update Maddie is doing much better. You would never know she was ever hurt by looking at her. She want to run and play fetch as much as ever. We still haven't brought her to the vet. I will have the vet check it out the next time we go in. |
