Excessive coughing My 12-year old has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. The vet took an x-ray. There are not fluids in her lungs, but her heart is enlarged. He says that the heart might be bumping her trachea and making her cough excessively. We are going to a specialist, but it will be a week. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any advice. Other than the coughing, she is fine and even playful. |
I'm not familiar with this issue, but I just want to say I'm sorry that you and your baby are going through this. I pray that there is a treatment that will allow your baby to live a normal life :) |
I'm so sorry to hear about this! My yorkie had kennel cough when we got her, and she's still gettin gover it. I have heard about smaller breeds such as yorkies and poodles having problems with collapsed tracheas when they get older, which can cause excessive coughing. I hope your baby is ok. |
My Bailey has a "collapsing Trachea". I have heard other small breeds have this problem. Periodically, Bailey will cough or appear to be choking and after a few "hacks" he is fine. This has happened since he was about 6 months and he is 3 years old now. Maybe that is what you are experiencing? If it has been going on for some time, that is. If it has just started, your diagnosis may be correct. Hoping and praying for many more years with your baby. SamC and Bailey:animal-pa |
Maya my Pom is 10 years old and she has just been diagnosed with Cushing's disease but the specilaist wanted her to have another chest Xray because 6 months ago her xray showed an enlarged heart and she has a murmur. SO I took her today and the vet called and said I could pick her up and he would explain it to me. He showed me the Xray and her heart is pressing up against her trachea and the trachea is severley collapsed flat in one rather large area. I asked him what were the options and he said basicaly 3 things, surgery, which is risky and not without complications, and he would not advise putting Maya under with all her problems, cough suprressent and steroids, but the Cushings disease is where she is producing too much cortisone so he said basiclly she is treating herself and she is still coughing a lot. So if we treat the cushings it will make the trachea worse. if we treat the trachea it is making the cushing's worse, So I am waiting for the specialist to get the reports and I have the Xrays and she will talk to the cardiologist and get back to me. I will let you know what the cardiologist says about the enlarged heart and trachea. |
