The #1 reason for deaths in puppies is falls. That is why falls are such a scary thing. The same thing happened to our baby when she was very little. She jumped out of my arms and landed on the hard kitchen floor. I am also 5'6" and it scared me nearly to death, but thank heavens she was fine. In your case, I'm wondering if she hit her head and maybe has a concussion. A concussion will cause the sufferer to feel sleepy and possibly fall into a coma if they are allowed to sleep. Also it causes imbalance while walking. I dont know how you would check for a difference in pupil size of the eyes in a dog's case because that is a sign of concussions in humans. Personally, I would be prone to take the dog to the vet whether the vet likes it or not. Sometimes you just have to "put on your mean pants" as one of my colleagues says who used to work in a kindergarten, and have a thick skin and just be pushy. |
I'm going to check my medical book that I downloaded from a vet and see if he mentions what you should check for. |
I don't think I would rely on phone calls here. It really sounds like she was was hurt and needs to see a vet ASAP. I would put her in the car and take her immediately. Kim |
I would not wait. I would find a vet that would see her immediately. Acting normal a few hours after a fall is one thing but acting unusual warrants a vet visit ASAP. I hope she is ok. |
I'd really take her to a vet RIGHT away. I wouldn't wait a second. When Bentley was a puppy he weighed about 4 lbs and jumped out of his carrier and landed on his back. I was terrified that he was going to die.. but he didn't yelp, cry, or act any different than usual. He just bounced back up off of the ground and ran right to me. I still took him to the vet asap to be sure. From the way you described the situation I'd take her in immediately. She seems as if she was in pain and she could have been injured. |
I would also bring her to a vet or vet er asap. Not trying to scare you, just thinking about your baby. A fall like that and then sleeping and being unresponsive even for a short while may point to something serious. It could be internal in which case you won't know unless you take her in. I hope your baby is all right and she heals right up. Will be thinking of her. Please keep us posted on her progress :hands: that she will be A-ok. Ps. I see that this is Chloe's second fall since you've had her for a week and a half, I would take her in for sure. It is much better to be safe than sorry. I hope she is ok |
I'm a university student in nursing and I also thought that she may have had a concussion. I checked pulse, respirations, and pupil reflex. Her pupils were ok & equally responsive (I checked when she was asleep & awake), pulse was a bit on the slow side, but she was sleeping so that's normal. Respirations were perfect for a puppy at 26. She hasn't vomited or anything. As far as I know she didn't fall on her head, but I screamed and jumped to save her before she even hit the floor so I'm not positive. She's been awake since my last post & seems good. I'll still be taking her tomorrow, though, of course. She's not crying when she walks anymore and she wants nothing to do with her bed anymore which is normal. She ate a good dinner, drank, and peed. Mommy & Daddy were (and are) very worried, but she seems to be right back to normal. Mommy cried 10x more than Chloe... |

Oh poor Chloe ! I pray to god that she will be fine. Royce fell from my arms when he was a baby he cried from 2 minutes then immediately went backto normal and ate his food and drank and played with me . I called the ER it was at night and the vet told "me if he eats drinks and acts normal that's a good sign however keep an eye on him the whole night and bring him in the morning" that's what i did the following day the vet checked everything carefully ....Keep an eye on her the whole nignt and if you see any change please take her to the ER . Keep us posted . |
This is something I ALWAYS fear. I try not to walk around too much holding my babies. But that is almost impossible. I am usually very cautious on how I hold them. I hope it all works out for your baby. Def. keep us informed of how the vet visit goes tomm. |

My thoughts are prayers are with you and Chloe. Yorkie pups are the wiggliest things - one minute they are all about being in your arms and then next they are zooming around. These little ones can get injured so easily. I hope that all goes well at the vets - plz keep let us know. |
