Something is wrong with Izzy About a month ago we had to take Izzy to the Vet ER. She was sleeping so much and then when I tried to wake her up to play with her she was all disoriented and her legs were stiff and we would stand her up she would just fall. Then she would like twitch, like she was have a seizure or something. Well at the vet they said they though that she might have hit her head with my parents dog, because all of her blood tests and her ekg and catscan looked okplaying they gave her some steroids and fluid and kept her over night. The next day she was fine. Well last night she did it again, she hadn't been playing with any other dogs and had not hit her head. She was like bobbing her head and she just looked like she was really dizzy, she couldn't stand in one spot without losing her balance but she would run around fine it was just when she stopped. Well i stayed up with her most of last night making sure she was ok and this morning she seemed to be fine. Is there anyone out there that might know what might be going on with my little Izzy girl? I am really worried about her. |

Is that how they act when they have liver shunts? When we took her in a couple weeks ago everything came back normal in her blood tests, they said her heard rate was a little off but nothing to be concerned about... |
Have they done a bile acid test to rule out liver shunt? Maybe it could be a nerve disorder or maybe hydrocephalus? Just throwing suggestions out there...I'm so sorry that you and Izzy are going through all this, please let us know what the vet tells you. The following are just a few symptoms of liver problems... Drooling Vomiting Pacing Circling Inability to sit still for any length of time Drinking lots of water A stuperous look Head pressing Staggering Listlessness Runny nose Blank look/stare Lethargy Not all dogs display all the symptoms, but you will get to know the ones your dog displays. It is best to head it off early although you cannot always do this. |

I just saw an episode last night on E-Vets Intern on Animal Planet and this Weinereiner (sp) had a stroke that affected an area near the brain stem. After some treatment and time, it was okay. The symptons were the couple saw her in her crate laying down with legs straight out. When they tried to get her out, she couldn't stand. The way they knew what to look for was she was moving her head from side to side. She had no balance. |
Have they tested for Atlantoaxial instability?? Most doctors don't look for this. All they need to do is take an xray to see if she has it. This goes undiagnosed over and over or misdiagnosed. I know it did with my little guy and that is how he broke his neck. And for that the symtoms that you see for Liver shunts are the same as for AAI(Atlantoaxial Instabitily) This is a problem in the neck area. If you go to petplace.com you can look it up on there. I could write you everything that is on there but it might be easier to see if for yourself. I sure hope she gets better. With Babybear he was fine also some days he would walk weird or complain of neck pain my vets told me it was a pinched nerve. He had what looked like a sezuire two times on me also. If it is this you need to keep her calm and no jumping. Please let us know how she makes out. And push the vets to tell you what is wrong with your baby just like you would if it was your skin child. Otherwise they just give you well it could be this and it could be that. Have the vet test her for what you want her tested for. please. keep us posted please, val and babybear |
Can it be low blood sugar? You can try giving her a little nutrical as a supplement everyday and see if that solves the problem? Good luck. I hope things will get better. |
Have you checked her ears? I had something a couple of weeks ago that made me totally dizzy, and I mean the kind of dizzy you get when you get off an amusement ride, only all I was doing was turning around in bed or leaning my head forward. The dr. said it was an inner ear inflammation and that it would go away on it's own. They give you some sort of tranquilizer to slow you down and thus slow down the dizziness. Anyway, that's a possibility especially if they have a lot of ear hair which seems to retain moisture, or if they have been bathed recently and gotten water in their ear or if you haven't been cleaning her ears regularly. Of course your doctor would have to have a look in order to tell conclusively. |
So Sorry !!! I do not have any answers for you, but my 3 year old Winston does something that sounds very similar. My vet is treating it as hypoglycemia,which I question, because he eats very well and weighs nearly 8 pounds. During a seizure they did check his sugar and yes it was low, but isn't it true that seizures will lower their blood sugar??? I hope this gives you some comfort, and I really hope she is feeling better real soon. Sending a prayer your way. |
