Kennel Cough Help-- What Eases Coughing?? This is not about our Yorkie, and I hope it's alright that I am posting here. Our Chi has kennel cough, poor little guy. The vet prescribed amoxicillin, and said it will have to run its course. She did not give anything to help his caugh, saying he would just overdose on any cough suppressants and be lethargic, since he is 1.5 lbs. Well, today he has been having fits of coughs that sometimes last 5 minutes, and it's heartbreaking besides being worrisome. His temperature was 101.9 an hour ago, which is normal. I called the emerency vet hospital. They said we can bring him in and they would prescribe something for the cough, or we can wait until morning and see his regular vet. We thought we would wait since it costs 150 dolars just to walk in through the hospital doors. BUT, the little guy is obviously in pain. Does anyone know of a home remedy to ease his pain (like warm water or something), or should we just suck it up and drive an hour to the hospital? Thanks in advance. |
Put him in the bathroom full of steam, just run the shower real hot and keep the door shut. I would stay in with him. Cali had it when I got her and gave it to my pom and they had it for 3 months. Just watch for signs of pneumonia. fever, wheezing. Good luck |

we brought layla into the vet... he gave us meds to stop it from becoming pneumonia.. with pups this little you might not want to take the chance.. but we use a humidifier at night now.. she's 3 weeks past the meds and still coughing a bit at night |

Also, she is almost a year old now and has a better immune system than the little guy (we're hoping). I don't know, we're doing our best to take care of them. I hope they will both be fine. kennel cough is the worst.. because lik eyou said.. all we can do is watch them cough... it breaks my heart because it seems to just take over her body... she has these fits... usually at night... i feel so bad for her.. but hang in there... you aren't alone on this one :) |
Just be careful...some vets don't want you to give them anything for the cough. I would for ask your vet first if they think your pup should have anything. They sometimes want the stuff to come out if it can and not just sit in there. |

PS Take a nice warm shower and take your pup in there - she can sit and wait for you while you do that and breath in the nice vapors. |
when I first got Monday she had a cough, they gave me HYCODAN to give her ... it knocked her out (I had to lower the dosage) ... when I got Friday she had a cough as well, they gave me Zithromax for her ... it worked ... both these dogs were about 2 lbs. at the time. I hope you can solve the problem before it escalates .... itz so sad to watch them in distress. |
We talked to the vet this morning, and they gave us cough tablets to give to the chi as needed. I am just going to give him one dose at bed time and use the steam method during the day. He definitely needs his night sleep for his body to heal, but I don't want him to be drugged up 24 hours. We'll see how it goes tonight. Lemon is a great home remedy for cough. Put a little in Chi's water. It wont hurt. |
Hi there, My sweet little naughty Yorkie pup was coughing alot too, as if he was trying to cough/hack something up. Especially at night. I went to a fancy vet, spent 700 dollars, and, got no improvement whatsoever: just x-rays, some talk about his trachea, and some oral antibiotics. Then I went to a vet who charged me $138 for a shot (injection in the back) of anti-biotics and a shot of anti-histamines, (all right then and there, in his office) and for ten days of at-home oral antibiotics. After two days, no more coughing at all! Just a happy, healthy, pesty little Yorkshire! So, please, don't give up, request or suggest this treatment. best of luck |
