Please give me your opinion: Question about spaying 1 Attachment(s) I am little paranoid. :( Momiji is 6 month old, 2.5 lb. I wanted to spay her, micro-chip her, and pull baby teeth out at the same time. But now that she is so tiny and I don't see any adult teeth yet, I'm not sure if I should wait for little longer. Should I wait for her to gain little more weight or have adult teeth??? Please give me your opinion. I want to do what's best for her. BTW, my vet said wait until she has little more weight. Thank you!! |
puppy I am pro spaying, but we have to use common sense..you girl is a wee one. Even if she comes into season in the next few months it is not the end of the world...wait and spay her at perhaps a year..hopefully she will be 3 full pounds..that is safer IMO...I like a better safe then sorry vet...plus, her teeth are not in..wait... |
my morgan was spayed at 6 months and she was about 3 lbs (also micro-chipped and had 6 teeth pulled). me and my vet were confident that she was going to be fine. I did no pre-op blood work because honestly its unneccessary unless you have prior problems. I used to work as a tech in my vets hospital and was 100% confident in his abilities to spay a small puppy. I'd seem him do it many many many times. So as long as your pup is healthy and there are no problems i say go for it. however if your vet is saying wait, then maybe he isn't too sure of his own abilities to spay at such a tiny weight. maybe go get a second opinion somewhere else. your choice. |
Thank you both. I am Pro-spay myself. My concern was my vet seems not confortable with tiny dog.... He is really nice but I'm not sure if he has enough experience with tiny dog. I will wait little longer so she will be little bit bigger and hopefully teeth will coming out as well. Again, thanks!!!! |
if your gut is saying don't go to that vet... don't go to that vet... just find another one for the spay... that is if you are confident in his other abilities.. these little ones take very special care when they are under.. and you don't want his inexperience to put her health in jeopardy! |
Hi Kana :D that is such a cute picture of Momiji! I can't wait to have her here! Umm...I'm no pro either, but yeah, wait till she puts on some more weight to be safe. And I can refer you to my vet just for the spay if you want to look for someone with more experience with our little ones? I have not gone to him yet for the spay, but they have tiny dogs there all the time and I totally trust him! Or, my vet that did Vixxen and Lexxi's spay is really good too - she is just further which is why I changed... |
my only concern with waiting is that she could possibly go into heat. spaying before the first heat cycle greatly reduces the chances of getting breast cancer to almost zero (0.05%). After the first heat the chance of getting cancer goes up to 30% and after that it goes up even more with each cycle. |
teeth If you spay now before the adult teeth are , then if any baby are retained, she will need a second procedure... |
Do yorkies ALWAYS need to have their baby teeth removed? I am in the same situation...my baby is 6 months old and 2.8 lbs and I don't feel comfortable having her spayed at this time. Do they never loose their baby teeth on their own? I don't see 2 sets of teeth from what I can tell, but I can't see the back teeth very well. |
akina - are you sure there are no signs of adult teeth yet? by 6 months old she should have her adult incisors (front teeth) and her canines should be coming in as well. the incisors start coming in at 4-5 months and the canines at 6months, then the molars. its hard to tell sometimes because their teeth are so small to begin with. are all her teeth still razor sharp puppy teeth or have they 'rounded' out some? |

My vet told me that with the pre-op blood work they can identify problems. I am a nurse and I know that with people that the pre-op blood work is a must. What if you have low blood count, you would need to build that up before loosing anymore during surgery. My vet also told me that she has identified liver problems through the pre-op blood work when there was no signs/symptoms of liver problems yet. I am going to have it done when Hannah is spayed just for peace of mind. |

Sometimes the in house blood work at certain vet's offices can run upward to $100 for just a few things tests. Some vets will also tell you they are doing pre-op bloods and then only run a creatine, or glucose, because the animal is so young, figuring they don't need a full panal run (and its also cheaper). So if you really want this blood work done, make sure you ask for what you want. Tell him what your looking for to be tested, or just ask for a full panal. |

Thank you all!!! Boy, I wasn't on for a while and now I got so many responses!!! Well, I'll talk to my vet again and if I feel uncomfortable with him, I'll look for new vet. LoveMyGirlz (Trina), I can't wait for Momiji to have sleep over for few nights!!! I'll be heart broken but I have to travel for few days... I have a nightmare about Momiji not wanting to come home with me after the business trip because she had such a great time with your girls.... She is doing good but how's your Truffles??? I hope she is doing better!!! |
My pup was small at the time of her spay and I also didn't feel comfortable with my vet's ability to operate on her. Nyx was less than 3 lbs when she was spayed. I found an animal hospital where they routinely perform surgeries on small animals. Four months later she's completely healed, can't see or feel the scar. As for teeth, I thought the docs would have to remove an insane amount but she only had double canines, she lost all her teeth. They sometimes swallow them by accident which is why I didn't find any loose teeth. Good luck with your pup and only do what you feel comfortable with. |

Im a little late coming in on this one... Miss Kimber is booked to get spayed on Friday - she is just over 3 lbs at 6 months... I don't think it's a good idea to NOT get bloodwork!!! Kimber got bloodwork done on Thursday - she is not at the vet all day today getting more bloodwork/bile acid tests and x-rays to see if she has a liver shunt or other problems. If I didn't get the blood work the vet says she could have had serious trouble when they put her under, so I am very glad I did!!! I know someone else with a male they got fixed at 7 months and had his baby teeth pulled :) |
I am in the same situation and I am scared because London will be 6 mos old soon and she is only 2 lbs. I really am going to have to do a lot of research on a vet I can trust that has a lot of experience with small dogs. |
Better off waiting until you find out if the canines come out. No sence on having her go under twice. |

its in Hohokus, which is next to paramus and ridgewood. if you were to take the GW over you can take 80 to the parkway. probably only take 20-30 minutes. you'd have to make a first time appt first so they can do an overall health check before doing surgery. |
