Help! My dog ate chocolate covered caramel balls She ate quite a bit of them (maybe 10 pieces, they are like milk duds). She is acting ok for the moment, but I just caught her maybe 10 minutes ago. Is there any way I can enduce vomiting? The vet is closed and I can't afford the emergency clinic. Any advice? Thank you for any help you may be able to give. |
This tells you how to induce vommiting of a dog http://www.doctordog.com/dogbook/dogvomit.html |
im not thebest with advice because im still new but i have heard the ladies on here say to give them a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide? ladies if i am wrong im soo sorry but i think thats what i ahve read, maybe you can call an emergency hosital vet or somehting, and just ask them? i know when my cats ate my kids jeely beans and chocolate eggs i thought they were going to die but they never did anything so im not to sure since i havent had it happen and i am still new. |
oh no..chocolate and dog is not a good combination...I hope your baby will be okay. |
I called the emergency clinic and even another vet, but they wouldn't tell me how to do it. They said I had to bring her in. Thanks for the info chachi's mom. I'm off to the store right now. The only thing I have on the list is salt. I'm not too crazy about giving my dog a teaspoon of salt. That sounds dangerous in itself. I'm going with the ipecac. |
If you cant find it I know people have did it with the peroxide too |
Good luck. Keeping fingers crossed.:goodluck: |
If your unclear remember you can call the pet poison control and they can help you induce vomiting if they feel that was too much chocolate for his weight. |
Good luck... Maxi got into some chocolate when he was about 4 months old. We were leaving for church and I noticed a napkin that had chocolate in it. we took him to the emergency room - where the induced vomiting. My sisters dog also got into some and they used the peroxide - which worked. I hope your puppy is ok! |
Hydrogen peroxide is usually what the ER vet and poison control will recommend to induce vomiting. If the chocolate was milk chocolate, it is not as dangerous as dark chocolate. I hope your baby is okay with nothing more than an upset tummy. Please keep us posted. |

I just got back from the store. Actually three different ones and none of them had Ipecac. I got peroxide. Each of the vets told me that it was alot for her size (she's 6.5 pounds). She's still acting ok, but I'm off to make her throw up just to be on the safe side. Thanks for all your help. :) |
Please keep us updated. I hope she won't have any problems. |
It is one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide and one teaspoon of milk to induce vomiting. Ive never heard of giving a small dog impicac. Good luck hun. Keep us posted! |
Thanks again for all of your advice and concern. I gave her one teaspoon of peroxide and she started vomiting. I think she got it all out. I hope so anyway. All I could see was brown and tan goo. Nothing was whole anymore. She vomited quite a bit too. I'm sure her belly has to be empty. Now she is laying on my lap all wore out. Poor baby. Hopefully she will be ok now. I'll just have to keep an eye on her. Thank goodness for this board! I wouldn't have known what to do and would have spent at least $100 at the vet (that's what they told me). |
Thanks for the update. I am glad she is going to be okay now |
Glad you got her to vomit. That's all they would have done at the emergency vet, and charged you out the ying yang for it too:mad: I hate that they are so greedy! Keep your baby hydrated and maybe give her some plain rice for dinner. |
Who would have ever thought we'd be posting to say good for your baby vomiting?! Be prepared that she may have some diarrhea still tonight. Hopefully she threw most of the chocolate up. Poor baby. Give her hugs and kisses from us and let us know in the morning how she is doing. |
Hi, I just wanted to let you know that I've always heard it's mostly the dark chocolate that is really toxic to dogs. I'm sure that enough milk chocolate would hurt, but it would probably take a lot. Of course depending on how big your baby is it would make a difference. Before we knew chocolate was bad for dogs my aunt used to feed her rat terrier Hersey's kisses and he is fine. I hope this gives you a little peace of mind. Whitney |
here is the toxicity per lb of dog milk chocolate toxicity = 1 oz eaten/pound body weight. semi-sweet chocolate toxicity = 1 oz eaten/3-6 pounds body weight. baker's chocolate toxicity = 1 oz eaten/10 pounds body weight cocoa beans toxicity = one ounce eaten/10-33 lbs body weight |
Thanks everyone. Minni is great. She got up this morning and ate and pooped just fine. She's back to her normal self. Thanks for the chocolate/toxicity chart. She weighs 6 pounds, but I know she didn't eat 6oz. of chocolate. She did eat quite a bit though, and I didn't know if caramel was dangerous either. Better safe than sorry I guess. |
Oh GOOD:D!!!! You probably saved her from having a heck of a tummy ache too;) All that sugar and fat could have made her really sick, so it's good you got her to "give it back" |
Oh, I am so glad she is doing better. :) :) Good to know the toxicity and how to induce vomiting as well. Yorkies are sometimes too resourceful for their own good. They find a way to get into things they are not supposed to. |
So glad that your baby is fine:aimeeyork |
