Has anyone dealt with eye infections?
 

Lola has always had some tearing out of both her eyes, like we've all dealt with. Her left eye has always had more than her right, but never to the point of being a problem. Every single day we have the same old routine of cleaning her eyes, combing away the gunk, and making sure all the hair is up in her topknot.

Well, on Saturday, after about two days of of her left eye watering more than usual, I was having hubby hold her while I cleaned her face. She was facing the window, so the light was shining right into her eyes, and I noticed her left eye was turning blue! :eek: I freaked out, because it looked a lot like my old cocker's eyes when she looks into the light (she has bad cataracts). I know her eye wasn't like that the day before. Hubby said it looked just like when cattle get pinkeye. I got right on the phone to the vet and they said they didn't have any appointments open but to come in right away anyway because they don't delay when it comes to eye problems. They did a stain thing on her eye and found that there's a small ulcer there, most likely from a hair or something getting into her eye and scratching the cornea. The blue is from all the cells that go to that area to try and fight the infection.

So, I have to give her two different medicines in her eye three times a day for a week, and if that doesn't help they'll have to sedate her and look under her eyelids to see if there are any eyelashes that are grown in the wrong way or anything else that might have caused it. :( I just hope these meds work and clear it up, because the thought of sedating her freaks me out. The vet said that the blue will eventually go away as her eye heals. Please keep Lola in your thoughts!

I'm sorry she's having that problem. I've heard of it before. Should clear up with the medicine, but I've also heard about the lash problem. I'm betting the medicine will take care of it. Will be thinking about her.:)

Wow! I have this problem with Bentley. Mainly just with the weather changes... He also is a baby, when he gets his feelings hurt from us saying no, he will honestly cry tears. :rolleyes: But I don't have to clean them everyday...

I'm new to this forum, but not new to eye infections! I have a six year old Yorkie and she's probably had 3-4 eye infections over her lifetime. They all seem to come from getting hair or lashes or whathaveyou stuck in her eye, even though we go through the same routine of making sure they're clean and clear of hair, sometimes twice a day.

Her first infection really scared me - her eye was completely covered in a white film one morning! Anyway, the vet gave me some ointment to put directly onto her eyeball, three times a day, and it cleared up in no time. Now I can tell if one is coming on - she will paw at her eye quite a bit and the lid will look a little puffy. I will usually put the ointment in that eye for a day or two and her symptoms go away.

My groomer knows not to clip the hair on her muzzle to short, because it points straight up when it grows back (and it seems to grow directly into her eyes) and that has helped a LOT.

Anyway, I feel for you!

I just had to take Bailey in for her eyes because she woke up and her eye was covered in goo...yuck..The vet did a stain on her eye, (it was ok, she thought maybe the puppy scratched her eye) then she checked her eye lashes and then (I learned something new) checked her 3rd eyelid. Everything was ok, but she gave me some drops to put in her eye and I have switched back to bottled water for them to drink. Her eyes cleared up in a few days.
Just keep cleaning them with warm water and putting the drops in.

Poor baby, we will keep her in our thoughts, hope she :getwell:

Thanks everyone! Lola is doing a lot better after having the eye medications all week. It actually cleared up pretty quickly, but I'm going to keep the meds going through the weekend anyway, just to be safe.

Hi! I should have scrolled down a little further to read your post first because this sounds exactly like what Max and I are going through right now. I hope your meds do the job for you as well as for Max so the poor babies don't have to be sedated for further testing/looking at their eye.

I've read that excessive tears can be caused from food allergies but I don't remember what the ingredient was that caused it. I read it on YT so maybe a search will bring it up.

I hope Lola is feeling better today......
