I had Brandi back to the vet today I'm probably sounding neurotic right about now......but I'm so stressed out with how she's acting since getting spayed that I'm making myself sick...... I took her back to the vet today and he said her heart and lungs are fine....and the incision is healing beautifully......my complaint is that I think her throat is bothering her......which he said is probably sore from the tube......but all she's doing is sleeping.....(she's eating and drinking moderately and taking her meds).....and then she just sleeps and sleeps and sleeps..... I must go back to work tomorrow.......and of ALL DAYS my son has to be in at 7 A.M. so I'm quite frantic about leaving her......though I figured out I will split my lunch hour into two half hours and run home twice to check on her...... Everytime I've read about a puppy having been spayed I hear how fast they bounced back....I don't understand why Brandi doesn't seem to be bouncing back that fast........can someone please help me with if this is normal.....because she's going to end up being fine but I'm not..... |
It was several days before Lucy felt better after her spaying. I think a lot of it was from the anesthesia. She laid around for about 3 days afterwards and I made sure she didn't jump, climb stairs, etc. She didn't have much of an appetite either so I made sure she drank lots of water and I let her lick a popsicle a couple of times. (She loves them and she always gets the last little bite off the stick:) ) I'm sure Brandi feel better soon, but when in doubt call the vet. |
layla is ALWAYS very slow to come out of sedation (i say this like we do it often  ) but she has been under twice and she is still dopey 3 days later... this is MAJOR surgery on her tiny little body... give her time... i think she is acting completely normal but i can udnerstand how as a mom it seems scary... i'm glad you took her back in for her throat.. you just never know! maybe the tube scratched her throat on the way down or something... poor babe! tell her layla sends lots of kisses!! keep us updated! |
Are you still giving pain meds? If you are, that could be why she sleeps so much. |

Awww poor mommy! I agree, I have one dog who takes several days before bouncing back out of the anesthesia. Some react differently. I'm sure your baby is fine and sleep/rest is probably the best thing for her! Don't worry mom! |
Cali was in the hospital 36 hours and then came home and laid around for a week then she just bounced back. Some just bounce back slower. I bet she will be fine in a day or two. But I know I was worried becasue I have had others bounce back in a day or two. |
wow that makes me feel a little better......she never had any pain meds.......he offered them to me today but I refused them at this point she honestly doesn't appear to be in pain........except for whatever it is...is going on with her throat....... she can have regular people popsicles? I bet she'd LOVE that...... I think what was so upsetting to me was that many if not all of the posts on puppies that had been spayed.....said "my dog bounced back the next day" or that their dog was running and playing with their other dogs the next day Well I'm just going to try to relax (I know that will never happen) I'm going to be a wreck all day tomorrow.......but I just want to thank you all for making me feel better...... |
Glad you are a little less anxious. With you at work all day she will get a lot of rest and probably be feeling better when you come home. |
I am having a similar situation with my puppy who was just spayed on Tuesday (2/27). She was really slow moving and whiney and just wanted to sleep all the time. Also he bark was very hoarse, i'm not sure if that's what you mean by her throat seeming to bother her. Now 6 days after surgery she's still a little sleepier than normal but she does play and eat normally, and slowly but surely she's getting her bark back. Keep me posted on your little one, i'm sure she'll be fine while you're away. It's so funny you sound so much like me, all i ever do is worry, i must call the vet at least once a week. |
Brandi is doing much better today......I don't think I could have taken another day of her being so lethargic....I came home on my lunch hour to check on her and she was perky and frisky......and was kissing me.....and seemed a lot like her old self......which made me deleriously happy.......and when I came home from work OMG she greeted me and was jumping (I had to pick her up I was afraid she was going to hurt herself jumping) and she even barked at me......she seems to be "talking" now which she never did before.....it was sooooo cute....... p.s. it wasn't her bark that was concerning me......she just seemed extremely uncomfortable and was contorting her neck into these bazzare positions that just didn't seem normal.....she is sleeping now......I guess she wore herself out.......but I can deal with that.....I understand she's been through an ordeal......but the fact that she's perking up makes me feel A LOT better |
My neighbor has had 3 teacup poodles since we've lived next door to him and he says that putting a tube down their throats is hard on them. One of his teacups wound up with a chronic cough from having a tube placed down her throat. This is rare, but it can happen. |
I haven't heard her cough.......and her bark sounded normal.....the talking though OMG it's just priceless.....I will NEVER complain about her barking again....I don't care who it disturbs LOL it's music to my ears....... |
Bless her heart, I am so glad she is feeling better! |
So glad that things are geting back to normal:thumbup: |
