Maxx is sick and Mom needs advice:) Hi guys- I found this forum during the middle of the nite while I was up with Maxx again. Maxx is my 6 yr old -4LB yorkie-- well he was 4+ lbs but currently he is 3-1/2:( Anyway-- he was the runt of the litter at birth and has always been a hand full-- but he is my baby. Our most recent problem is that he seems to have developed auto-ammune anemia--- they transfused him 2 weeks ago and put him on steriods and antibiotics. Here's my challenge: #1- he isn't hungry on this med-- i have tried EVERYTHING-- so i feed him whatever he'll eat from my hand-- ( up until now he was a kibble and once a day soft food kid) now as I said ANYTHING he will eat. i plan to try dried infant formula and rice cereal (his original baby food) as he needs his strength to fight this thing! #2- he has always been an out potty boy-- but now he needs to pee 4-6 times during the night-- and i really need to train him to a pad-- i can't continue this schedule- my lack of sleep is becoming problematic-thus searching the web for help at 4am. HOW DO I TRAIN AN ADULT DOG TO A POTTY PAD??? #3- getting the meds down!! i have been hiding the meds in 1/4 inch cubes of cheese or sugar cookie dough-- but now he won't eat that- any ideas? any and all help would be appreciated- this is my first dog so experienced owners may have insights i have yet to find! many thanks- lesley, jax, fl |
Good golly - you've got a job on your hands. Best of luck to you. The only thing I can suggest is for the medications. Try crushing the pill between two spoons and mixing it with a small amount of peanut butter. Be sure to make sure it's not the tainted stuff going around. The protein will be good for him, as well as the natural sugars to give him energy. Hope this helps. If you find you need to change it up, try a bit of jelly, cottage cheese, chicken broth, scrambled egg, or something like that. Hope he feels better soon. |
Sorry to hear your baby is sick. The one dog food Cali would eat was Cesars canned. It's not a good food but when they won;t eat anything helps. Also with pills I always ask the vet if it is available in a liquid so I can syringe it to Cali, if not I crush the pill and add a little water and syringe it down. Good luck. |

He's not going on the floor-- but I did try taking the pad outside and placing it on the grass!! Naturally he stepped right off with my every attempt and went on the grass-:) maybe I'll try dabbing it up from the grass?:) |
So sorry your little guy isn't doing well. Have you tried boiled chicken breast and plain rice? As for the pads, as soon as he goes outside, rub the pad on top of the pee and then bring some grass in with you and spread on the pad. Hope this helps. |
Thank You All:) Thx for the PAD tip---I will put that plan into action IMMEDIATELY-my neighbors are going to think I am NUTS-- following my dog--rubbing the pee pad on his pee spots and harvesting grass to bring to my bedroom!!! But guess what-- I am willing to try ALMOST anything to get some sleep--- thanks for the words of advice-- he never pad trained so this is all new to me!!! Yes- I have tried boiled chkn-- rice---ramen noodles--scrambled eggs--chopped liver--you name it!!!! Boy this baby is being finicky-- my husband swears he just smart-- and now that my 4lb baby has his own personal chef-grin-- he'll just eat what and when he pleases-- since he has never had people food!!! I remembered today that his breeder gave him baby rice with bananas(for sweetness and potassium) mixed with baby formula(extra vitamins and iron)-- I ran to the store --- and guess what he ate 2 tblspns off my fingers!! THANK YOU ALL for your kind and insightful words:) |
I sympathise with you. I was going to recommend bring in grass or clipping from a bush he likes to pee on and bringing it in. Also, you might try wrapping a piddle pad around a soda bottle so he has something to lift his leg on - just make sure there is piddle pad under the bottle! Medicine might be tough if he is being picky about what he eats. Have you tried wrapping it in a piece of deli meat? How about cottage cheese or yogurt? Also, try boiling some chicken and KEEP the water. Once the water has cooled, you can give that to him instead of water. He will get some nutrients from it and you can add the chicken water to his meals too. |
