worried about my puppy Hi I have a yorkie about 5 months old for the past week she has been weak looking. She does not run around and play like a energetic puppy. She acted like a old tired dog. I gave her some of the Nutri-Cal that my breeder supplied. Last night my husband said she was drooling and walking into things. She seem to be eating and pooping fine. Does this sound like the low blood sugar thing. Help Very worried Shannon :( |
That sounds like hypoglycemia! I have to give Ludo 1 CC of dextrose every morning and night to make sure his blood sugar stays okay. I think you can also give them corn syrup. I would check with your vet! But most smaller dogs do get the low blood sugar! |
Here is a website with a list of signs of hypoglycemia & things to do if your puppy is hypoglycemic http://rnrkennels.datacruz.com/signs...pogltcemia.htm |
thank you so much :) :D |
poor baby - all puppies should be so full of spunk that you almost want them to slow down not perk up ....it sounds like she really needs a vet to look at her and maybe run basic bloodwork..... unless she does perk up from the Nutrical - then maybe that is all it is..... I don't want to be an alarmist but if it were me - I'd have the vet check her out - walking into things is not normal puppy behaviour......and GOOD LUCK !! |
Not to alarm you, but I agree with Villette, and I think you should take the pup to a vet. We had a Golden Retriever that started doing that, drooling and running into things. It turned out very bad for her, hopefully it won't for you. |
If it were me, I would get that baby to a vet right now! Please keep us updated. |

Ditto! I hope that the puppy will be okay. |
Any news?? |
She has a liver shunt. I am getting an ultrasound today to find out if it is on the inside of the liver or outside. If it is on the outside she will need surgery :( :( |
I am sorry to hear about your baby's liver shunt. But on the other hand, I am thankful that you got her to the vet and found the problem in time to do something about it. I pray it is treatable and your little girl recovers quickly! |
Prayers are with you. Have you notified your puppy's breeder? Do you have a contract for genetic defects? Your puppy's sire and dam should not be bred again. Did your puppy have litter mates? The possibility exists that the litter mates may have the same problem. |
Yes I have been in touch with my breeder. She is very good with the dogs. I do have a contract. Yes Lady has 4 litter mates. |
if anyone knows about this liver shunt does anyone know about how $$ I am looking at are we talking 1,000s or 100s? |

I am so sorry about that but hopeully they can get her back to health. Cali has a mild internal Liver Shunt that you can't surgically fix and she is just on a lower protein diet. I will keep your puppy in my prayers. Keep us posted. |

I'm pretty sure you're talking about 1,000, it is dependent of the extent of the shunt. There is also Dr Susan Centers. She is now working on finding a DNA marker for the Shunt. |
Oh poor baby! And poor you! Please keep us posted on her condition and what is next for her. You guys are in my prayers!! |

1. You caught it! 2. Veterinary medicine has come a long ways and there are many stories of successful corrective procedures. Just make sure you take her to a doctor who has a lot of experiance with Liver Shunts. Not all docs are trained or experianced with this condition. I wish you both the best and hope she gets back to her self soon. |
I am sorry to hear about your baby. :( |
I am so sorry, I will be keeping you and your baby in my prayers. |
So, sorry! Hopefully it will be mild and treatable. Hugs! |
Liver Shunt is what I thought as sooon as you said she was walking into things. I'm so sorry. i hope the breeder will compensate you. I know at five months old you love your baby but you shouldn't have to bear all the costs. |
Your Baby Hi Shannon, So sorry to hear about your little one. I agree we see to many Yorkies with LS. I just wanted to tell you that I know of many that have had surgery and done just fine. Also it will help your baby if you give a low protien diet. And as special laxitive that keeps them with soft stools. This is real important for the liver babies. I have been told that the Univeristy of Tennissee is one of the best places for surgery and they do this often on Yorkies. There is also to groups on Yahoo that are for Yorkies with liver shunt. You may want to check them out, I think they could give you a lot of information. If you are interested in these groups and have any trouble finding them you can contact me at my email address and I will be happy to give them to you. Learning how to care for them and the diet is so important but I do know many that have done well. Best of luck to you and look forward to seeing updates on your little one. Nell |
I'm so sorry to hear of your baby having a liver shunt. Bless her heart...and yours too! When I read your first post, my first thought was liver shunt too. I hope and pray it can be fixed with surgery and she'll be as good as new! I've read many success stories on LS babies! Hugs to you! |
