Bailey shakes Hello my name is Tiffany and i have a 9 month old yorkie named Bailey. She's a little over 3 lbs last time we had her checked out. She's always been really playful and energetic, but more recently i've noticed that she's been a little lethargic at times and she gets the shakes. She never had a problem with hypoglycemia as a puppy and my Vet said she was out of the age for that to happen now. The other morning i got up about 5am to use the bathroom and was surprised that Bailey didn't follow me...she follows me EVERYWHERE! Anyway when i found her she was just in bed shaking like a leaf. I thought she was cold so i covered her but she was still shaking at 7am. I decided to give her some nutrical and then we took a little nap. About an hour later the shaking had stopped so i thought that it was her sugar. But now its happened twice more since then and the nutrical doesn't seem to work. I really don't know what is wrong with her. What would cause the hypoglycemia, assuming that's what it is, to start now?? She's eating the same and isn't any more active than normal. any advice would really be appreciated...Thanks!! |
I am also a new owner and my baby had a spell with hypoglycemia. And he was eating. Well I was scared when this occured, so I called the vet. I took him in after giving him some honey. I had already tried the Nutricel. It turned out he had a parasite. And being so little he could not consume enough for the parasite and him. After a round of antibotics, he is doing great. Thanks, i'll keep that in mind when I take her to the Vet which will probably be tomorrow, I really cannot afford the emergency vet. Vet's in general in New York City are just so expensive. Sorry it was so long by the way, i'm just so worried about her. |
Shes not too old for hypoglycemia problems. When it is reoccuring like it has been she problably needs to be checked for possible liver problems |
I use honey butter to coat a few kibbles. One part honey to one part butter. For the hypoglycemia they do need a fast fix of sugar to bump their blood sugar but after that I use the hb because it metabolizes slower. But you should call the vet if it continues. I hope she gets better. It is times like this that you wish they could tell you what is wrong. |
Hi Tiffany and welcome to YT. I'm not an expert but I noticed that your baby is pretty small. Tia is just over 2 pounds and is 11 months. Tia also shakes alot. Most of the time it is because she is cold but I have also noticed she scares easily and she will shake even if something new is brought into the house. I cuddle her and usally it stops. I would return to the vets if there is still a concern. Best of luck! |
I just don't think i'm cut out for this sometimes, i've been a wreck all day. I've been willing her to tell me what's wrong all day! All she wants to do is sleep, she's hardly eaten anything today. I don't want to be one of those people who's constantly running to the vet for the slightest thing, but at the same time i'd hate to think that she could be getting worse and i'm just sitting here. And it doesn't help that my boyfriend just thinks i'm always overreacting and so he ignores me. Sorry to rant i'm just so frustrated! She doesn't want her kibble at all today, do you have any suggestions on something i can make her?? |
I feel for both of you. I know how it feels to have sick babies. Try and get her to eat something. Hamburger or chicken are good they usually will eat this and it shouldn't upset her tummy. I would watch her closely and if she seems worse take her to the er vet. Good luck I will keep you both in my prayers |
It's SO important that you get her to eat something, but please don't go trying many different things. That can cause tummy upset which will add to whatever's going on:( It's not the age of the dog that determines whether they can go hypoglycemic, it's their SIZE and your girl is tiny. They always need to be nibbling, do you leave her kibble down all the time? Well last night i finally got her to eat her food with a little boiled turkey breast (it was all i had) mixed in with it. She perked up quite a bit after that and we went to bed. This morning she was fine but still not wanting to eat her food so i took her to the vet and apparently she's in heat. I don't know how true this is but they said that some dogs act very strangely during their first heat. They didn't do any tests because she was so hyper and crazy while she was there, but they did tell me to keep an eye on her if it happens again. She also gained a whole pound and a half since taking her in a month ago. So hopefully that's all that was wrong, i'm crossing my fingers!! Thanks for all your advice and support. You'll probably be hearing from me again next week because we scheduled her to be spayed :( I'm sooo nervous!! |
