Kennel cough advice needed I took Madison to the vet Tuesday, and she has kennel cough, she will be 7 weeks old tomorrow, The vet gave her a shot and put her on Clavamox twice a day, what I am needing to know is when a puppy has kennel cough will the symptoms get worse before they get better, because she is coughing more, and she sounds so pitiful when she coughs:( , plus she has clear drainage coming from her nose now, is this to be expected before she gets better, or should I call the vet back? Thanks, Alicia |
As long as her breathing sounds okay, she's probably just getting all that gunk up and out. Coughing and running nose, helps to get the congestion out. I hope that she feels better soon. Luna had some kind of respiratory infection that needed two rounds of meds, then it got better. The second med was clavamox, and within 2 days of starting that her cough got much better:thumbup: It helps to run a vaporizor too:) |
Awwww! :( I hope Madison get's better soon!!! I am going through the same thing right now with my Kobe...it is difficult, but just hang in there! I too was given Clavamox for the first round and it didnt help...then when I went to another vet I was given both an antibiotic and cough supp. If the vet later on wants to give you a cough supp. don't take it!!! Kobe got sooooo much worse and I ended up calling my vet back at home who said that the cough supp. was bad since it's trying to stop the cough; U WANT madision to cough! By coughing and sneezing, she's getting rid of all that mucus. Since I took Kobe off the cough supp. he's coughing and sneezing, but he's alert and active which is good. He might need another round of antibiotics, but from what I hear that's normal. Good luck with Madi and keep us posted on her recovery!! :animal36 |
Cali had it when I got her and gave it to Maya and they both had it for over 3 months. The meds just help to prevent it from going into a bacterial infection like pneumonia. It is a virus so antibiotics do not cure it. Time does and the meds protect them from a worse infection. Just keep a close watch for breathing difficulties. it does go away eventually! |
My Chiara had Kennel cough when I got her and Clavamox helped within a few days. It took a couple of weeks for her to fully recover though. Good luck! |
