Help! My Yorkie swallowed 2 Rawhides I gave mayson a rawhide and later could not find it - i just thought that maybe it was left somewhere i could not see. I gave him another and literally saw him swallow it. It was gone before I could even open his mouth. I'm convinced that he swallowed the first. Both rawhides were thin sticks, about 3 inches long. I started to do some research online and i'm totally freakin out. I keep reading about gastrointestinal obstruction, which requires surgery. Please HELP!! Do I need to take Mayson to the emergency room? |
I would definatley keep an eye on him!!! |
Those things will swell to three times or more of their dried size. I'd call the Vet. |
The only way to get a difinitive answer is to take him to the vet. Is he eating at all? If he doesn't eat and starts vomiting, then that would probably be a symptom of a possible obstruction. |

This just happened about 20 minutes ago. He's now taking a nap. Also, I forgot to mention that Mayson is only 3 months. I think I need to call the vet. Will they have to cut him open? |
Hopefully not, sometimes they can give them a little sedation and look with a scope into the esophogus and into the stomach and reach it and pull it out...the chances of his being cut are alot less if they can get to it this way and this early in the situation...if it obstructs further into the GI tract, they have no choice but to make an incision to retreive it. |
OMG:eek: I hope and pray that you are on your way to the vet right now!!! |

But you mayson seems ok if nothing happened by now no more rawhides! take care p.s. no more greenies too |
I did take Mayson to the vet last night and the they induced vommiting and he was able to pass 1 whole rawhide and 1 that was chewed up. What a relief. :) Thanks everyone for all your help. |
Rawhides & Greenies My vet said not to give Buddy rawhides and also not to give them those "Greenies"-- |
Wew girl, I thought about you everytime I rolled over last night...so glad everything is OK!!! |
I am so glad you took him in. I always say better safe than sorry. Glad he was able to avoid surgery. |
Wow, I'm so glad your fuzzy is ok. What a lucky little boy! Please never give rawhides, they are just too dangerous. We all learn from experience :) Greenies are dangerous as well, be very wary of hard to digest treats especially since you obviously have a 'gulper' (my harley is too). |
THANK GOD! Mason is ok!! Rawhides and Greenies aren't good to give your dogs (I know you didn't mention greenies but, I thought I would) Like one member said already they swell and,,,they are all fat! not good for them..My Parents had a dog that nearly died because a rawhide got too soft, she tried to swallow it and she was choking! My Dad had to stick his finger down her throat and thankfully he could grab it and pull it out...her tongue was turning blue..She would have choked to death if they weren't home...This happened many years ago...and greenies!! BAD, BAD, BAD! they can get lodged in the intestines...some dogs have died from this...Alot of members, including myself, use the bully sticks...I have 1 aggressive chewer and there is no way she can chew off a chunk...it is made from beef tendon so it gets kind of stringy looking but, they can't chew it apart...my girls teeth look awesome!! Good Luck and glad Mason is alright! |
