Red tear stains??? Gosh Chewy has these red tear stains and I can't get rid of them, they look awful and I guess it's off to the vet unless you guys know what I can do. |
Try to find food that doesn't have RED BEET PULP in it. Chicken Soup for Dogs is one. |
Also, you may want to wash the area with a warm wet wash cloth. Put some petroleum jelly on the area to prevent further stains...but really, it's probably because of the food. |
Thanks for the help... I was adding wet food to Royal Canine to get him to eat... I stopped cause I thought it could be his food.... I do wash the area twice a day to keep it clean. |
JUst google in dog tear stain and you will get an overload of information. |
Chews w/what ever that red/orange stuff is on them, anything in his diet that is red/orange will stain him, there have been other posts similiar to this. |
I am going to suggest a vet check so you can make sure its not a "red yeast" infection. That can cause red tear stains and only get worse if not treated. |
Wow never heard of that, one more reason I love YT. Info & Friends:) |
You need to make sure beet pulp is not in his food. That causes the red tear stains |
There is lots of info available online about tear stains. The beets used in dog food are white beets and don't contribute to tear stains. From what I have read the reddish color is actually a red yeast. Some low dose antibiotics can help. There is a product called Angel Eyes that you sprinkle on their food which contains a very low dose of an antibiotic (I think). Also some people find that using distilled or bottled water as drinking water can also help. |
Thanks for the help... I went to the vet and got eye meds.... Poor thing looks pitiful. |
The product in Angel eyes that makes it work is the tylan powder. If you try everything and he still has it, you might want to try the angel eyes or just buy the tylan powder as it is cheaper. Lots of people on the maltese forums use this with great results. I've had wonderful results with my maltese with switching to Chicken Soup but I know not everyone has. |
