16 day old Puppies Mom with Diarrhea My Yorkie is nursing 5 puppies and yesterday had a small amount of blood and mucous with 2 bowel movements, 5 movements total. We went to the vet who gave her cimetadine injection and metrodinazole for me to give her and that is a med that is contraindicted in nursing dogs. I called the vet hospital and they said it should not be given. Anyway, today, she has not had a bowel movement and she is eating. We have had trouble getting her to drink since the birth. I use a syringe or she has gotten subq fluids. My question is should I be concerned with no bowel movement and has anyone had a nursing bitch who would not drink. Her calcium level was fine a week ago when she was completely refusing water. Thanks |
Did they do a stool test for parasites (coccidiosis) I was reading a interesting story the other day & copied it http://www.dogworldwide.com/mertrisa & they use synolox alot. you may research it. |
When mine were sick & wouldn't drink, I force feed water & pedialite in a syringe. They drank it with no problem that way. |
I would be VERY concerned. I'd read the site suggested above and anything else I could find. Then I'd ask the vet about other options and what may be going on. If he doesn't sound interested, then it is probably a good time to search out a new vet. Something is definetly wrong with your girl. I have no experience with these symptoms or I'd help in any way I could. I do know I'd be in a total panic. You also need to keep an extremely close eye on your pups (she may pass whatever she has onto them). If you have a scale, keep checking their weights, check their eyes, and their stool. Please let us know what you find out and how she is doing. |
Mom is better Today she had a formed stool, no blood. Hopefully, it was just the small amount of cheddar cheese that I gave her. I am a OB nurse and I would not breed dogs for any amount of money after this experience. Five puppies for a 4 pound Yorkie is unusual. I never had her spayed beacuse she went in heat once in 7 years, I was scared of the anesthesia so my male Yorkie knew she was in heat and I did not. What a surprise. My vet bills are over $2000 and more to come for shots if all goes well. I am a sleep deprived wreck and I feel so sorry for mom. We will try a little rice cereal and puppy formula at 3 weeks so I hope they will eat and mom gets a little break. She is a wonderful mom and really freaks if anyone unusual comes in our house so I try to keep strangers away for now. Thanks for caring. |
I'm glad to here that. Keep us posted. |
I'm glad to hear that too. Is she acting normal "energy-wise"? She should seem exactly how she was before being pregnant as far as her energy level goes. If she is droggy or inactive, there is still a problem somewhere. |
