Need Some Help Please...
 

Hi. My Noel started with what I thought was an abcess on her left front paw but turned out to be a hot spot. I've heard of these but none of my Yorkies have ever had them. All my Yorks are kept immaculate. No feas, no parasites NOTHING. Always clean and well groomed. My house is clean and not nothing in it so I have no idea what would cause this "hot spot." Anyone have any info. on this and also any home remedies that have helped their dogs in the past? The vet shaved Noel's leg, said it was mild (but it has since spread a bit) and he sent her home with an antiseptic spray but since he thought it was mild he did not give her antibiotics or steriods. I want to bring her back in but now I have to wait till Monday as they are closed for the weekend. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm also pissed (Excuse my french) because I had to take Noel to a vet I did not know. Can you believe that my Vet Hospital that I've had for 10 years refused to get Noel in on an emergency. I have four Yorkies, all of which get their teeth cleaned yearly. I pay the fees of the Mayo Clinic there ($350 for a spaying - $250 for teeth cleaning each etc) and never complain. I never call up for B.S. and they told me they were all booked and that they were refering everyone to the emergency animal hospital. What crap!! Anyway, I spoke to the office manager who I don't recognize by voice or name and she was such a bit.. so I told her I wanted all my dog's records etc. and she said "Alright goodbye" and hung up on me. After I was already at the other vet, she called back and said to my husband "The doctor said he'd see your dog." MY DOG???? like I'm a stranger off the steet. 10 friggin years. And, what really hurts is they are they best around but what the heck good are they if they won't get you in when your dog is sick. If I wanted a basic care doc. shots etc. I could bring them to anyone. What crap is all I can say. I'm still so upset.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any help on hot spots that anyone can provide.

What does Noel eat? I think corn can cause hot spots. Does her food contain any corn products?

Hi. I feed her Nutro Max Natural (lamb and rice small bites) She's been eating it for over a year now. I'm dumb founded as to what the cause is. The vet said it could be an allergic reaction, but she has it no where else but on her one leg and she's not scratchy at all, just bites that one leg. I put bactoban cream on it tonight. I figured it couldn't hurt. It's an antibiotic cream by prescription for skin infections. It was prescribed to me for a spider bite and they use it for unknown skin infections as well. I just feel so bad for her. Thanks. Elaine

I am very sorry that Noel is on the injured list. Is it possible that she was bitten by a bug -- maybe a spider?

As for the vet -- if they won't see you in an emergency, then what good are they? Almost any vet can perform a routine spay or dental cleaning, but a vet who refuses to see a sick dog isn't much of a vet -- I don't care how much knowlege they have in their head or how much skill they have in they hands -- they are WORSE THAN USELESS!!

I guess I am spoiled --one of the vets from my vet practice will meet me any day of the year 24/7 for an emergency -- they are happy to help me and they don't take advantage of me when I receive a bill at the end of the month.

hot spots can be caused by really anything. she could have had an itch and started licking it which cause the spot. the word 'hotspot' is given to anything that is an imflammed spot on the dog which is red and/or itchy with hair loss.

and i'm sorry to say, a hotspot isn't an emergency really. I work at a vet's office and tho we wouldn't have been rude about it, we probably wouldn't have seen she either if we were totally booked up. hot spots can wait if there are actual emergencies that need to be seen.

So sorry. Your Vet probably has no idea how you were treated by her and needs to know, whether you go back there or not.

I don't want to be an alarmist - but a good friend here in houston had a yorkie with a little foot that ended up looking like hamburger due to her licking and chewing on it - they had been to the vet NUMEROUS times and finally got a skin scraping done - it was MITES - under the skin mites.

With a ton of treatment and months of vet visits - they finally got her foot back to normal - ASK your vet to check for them - they're not common but VERY hard to treat and from what I just saw - hard to diagnose

ps. this person has 2 yorkies - and only the one was affected

My vet said an allergy can take up to two years to develop.
