i finally got the test results back in,and its was confirmed that my baby does have a liver shunt,i'm so heart broken. he seems to be fine right now,but i really dont know what to expect. if anyone knows anything about this condition could you please let me know. i'm so worried about my baby.

I am so sorry for you. I know exactly how you feel, my little guy Bobo just had surgery to correct a liver shunt. You can pm me if you want to or ask any question here. I am sorry to hear that. Do they know if its internal or external? External they can do surgery. Cali has the internal one but hers is mild and she doesn't need medicine. I just watch her protein intake. Pm me if you want to talk more.

I am so very sorry to hear that you are going to have to deal with a liver shunt. There are many "success" stories from our fellow members. I know that Patti and Tdavis have already responded, maybe more will help. Now is the time to start researching so that you will know this "demon" you must conquer.

Spread the word to anyone wanting to buy a Yorkie from a breeder. Make sure the breeder has the bile acid test done before buying the puppy.

I'm terribly sorry you are going to have to go thru this. The operation is not cheap and should be done ASAP or your baby will die. Keep us posted on this.

Oh, I am so sorry about your news. I don't know anything about LS but my baby has a significant heart murmur and I do know about living with knowing your baby has a serious health problem. If you ever need to 'vent' feel free to PM me and I'll help in any way I can:)

That's awful, I'm so sorry. Piper has been having problems also. We go in April for more testing. Keep us informed on what you doing next & how things go. I'll keep him in my prayers.

he did have a bile acid test done and the vet called me at work to let me know that he does have a liver shunt and advised me to have xrays done so we will know where it is and how bad it is. but where i live i would have to take him 3 hours away. he seems to be fine, not had any seizures in about a month and has plenty of energy. was your the same way?

I'm really sorry about your bad news. I don't have any experience with LS, but I wish you and your baby well.

Cali had the liver ultrasound done by a board certified internest and it did not show a external shunt so they then did a Liver biopsy done by a board certified surgeon that showed a mils internal liver shunt which are inoperable but her's is mild. The surgeon said that generallywhen the Bile Acid levels are high but not real high it usually means an internal shunt, when they are real high (300) it is usually an external shunt which they can do surgery on. Cali's BA was 0/94. Normal I believe is 0/15.

As far as I know Bobo didn't have any seizures, as he got older he seemed to have more hypoglycemic episodes, by the time he was about 16 weeks he had 2 episodes in 3 days and I wrote about it here and someone here said their pup had the same symptons and was diagnosed with a liver shunt. He never liked to eat, I always thought that was strange, I would practically have to stand on my head to get him to eat. We went to puppy classes started when he was 10 weeks old, the first few weeks he liked the treats by the last 2 weeks he didn't want anything to do with eating the treats. We had an ultrasound with doppler and they were able to see the shunt. He did not gain any weight in a period of 6 weeks. Now 10 days after surgery he has gained 4 oz. He is still small, but now maybe since we got his surgery early he will be able to gain wt and grow more. I do know what you are going through, you should contact your breeder, she should at least refund your purchase price if nothing else. Mine didn't want to and I did not get a contract with him, we had to threaten to take her to court and she finally did agree to refund the purchase price, which I put towards the surgery costs. But I did spend $1000.00 just to make the diagnosis. Sorry about this being so long. It is nice to be able to discuss this with people. Tammy

I hear that University of Tennessee is the best place for the liver shunt surgery. I think it is a lady vet but I am not sure. But I see you are from KY so TN is not that far. I am so sorry about your baby. I have not had any experience with it but from what I read if it is mild sometimes all you need is dietary changes to controll it.
